Positive Behaviour for Learning Focus Be Responsible - I complete assessment on time |
From the Principal
As Semester 1 2018 is ending, please remind students that they must keep working to the end of term. Report cards will be issued Week 1, Term 3. We will celebrate Semester 1 Academic achievement early in Term 3.
Thanks to the high school’s Agricultural Team of Natasha Teffer, Alanna Ives, Lennie Cott and Kylie Whitaker for their efforts in the safe delivery of seven lambs. The school has been running a naming competition for the lambs. The triplets have been given the names of Edwina, Elliot and Eli. Thanks to the show teams who have been the adjudicators. Two sets of twins arrived late last week and have yet to be named.
To celebrate NAIDOC week, we are inviting the whole community to our NAIDOC ceremony and morning tea on Wednesday 27 June at 9.30am. Please RSVP to the Office on 4620 8222 for catering purposes.
Have a safe and happy holidays and we will see you in Term 3.
Mr Rob Tuppack, Acting Principal
From HoD Senior Secondary
It is hard to believe that we are almost halfway through the year. I would like to congratulate the many senior students who have worked exceptionally hard during the term and acted as excellent role models to the younger students in our school.
Exam Block
Year 11 and 12 students will be on block exams from Tuesday 19 June – Friday 22 June. This means that students who are up to date with assessment are allowed to work from home unless they have an exam scheduled. I wish the students all the best with their exams and assignments. Full school uniform is required when at school for exams and catch up work.
Head Start Orientation evening
Head Start students and their support crew are invited to attend the USQ Head Start Orientation at USQ Toowoomba on Tuesday 3 July. This evening provides an opportunity to connect with fellow Head Start students, and get important information such as how to navigate USQ StudyDesk. Previous Head Start students will be available throughout the evening. If you're unable to attend, resources are available online. Please RSVP via headstart@usq.edu.au by 29 June.
St George SHS Tertiary Tour
The school will run a Tertiary Tour during Week 10 next Term. This is open to the Year 11 and 12 students. All students who want to attend have been asked to email Mrs Addison information about their future career path so that the tour includes information that is relevant for the students involved.
For any questions or concerns you may have regarding your Senior Secondary students please email me at daddi4@eq.edu.au or call 4620 8205.
Mrs Deborah Addison, HoD Senior Secondary
From HoD Junior Secondary
Attendance
Attendance continues to be a school priority as every day counts towards improving the learning outcomes for our students. The stated goal for all students is 95% attendance. Below are the current rates for Years 7 to 9:
Year 7 |
Year 8 |
Year 9 |
84.6% |
82.9% |
85.5% |
Late to School
Over the last few weeks, students have been reminded of the process for arriving late to school. If your child is going to be late, it is a requirement that they provide an official reason when signing in at the office. This explanation can come in the form of:
- a signed note from home
- a phone call to the office
- a conversation with office staff as your child is dropped off
It is expected that the reason for being late to school will be provided by a parent/caregiver. Students arriving late to school without an official explanation or satisfactory reason will be issued with a lunch time detention as a consequence.
Mr Chris Smith, HoD Junior Secondary

Cross Country in Miles
On Friday 8 June, five St George State High School students travelled to Miles for the South West Cross Country trials. Laith Webster, Brad Schurmann, Sarah Whitaker, Samuel Waters and Jaspar Wilkinson competed in the carnival with 31 other students from the region and Balonne District. All students are to be commended for their impressive behaviour and sportsmanship.
Congratulations to Sarah Whitaker and Brad Schurmann in obtaining Age Champion for their respective age groups. Laith Webster was placed 9th, Sam Waters placed 11th and Jaspar Wilkinson placed 15th in 12 year old boys.
Good Luck to Brad who has made the SW Cross Country team and will now travel to Maroochydore for the State Cross Country Trials at the end of July.

NETBALL
Grace Waters, Year 7, represented the South West Region in the 10-12 years Netball State Championships. The games were held at the Commonwealth Games venue on the Gold Coast, 14-17 June. Congratulations Grace!
Manual Art Project for Year 9
The Year 9 students have been busy working on their Term 2 project. They have each constructed a stool out of a single piece of MDF sheeting. The students have learned new techniques like cutting out slotted joints and the importance of not dribbling the glue when assembling. They have also made use of new machines and tools such as the jigsaw and bandsaw. I think you will agree they look great.
Kylie Whitaker

More new lambs
On Thursday morning, 14 June, just after 8am the school welcomed twin lambs, one male and one female. On Friday morning, 15 June, the ewe, Juliette, gave birth to one male and one female. This adds to the three lambs born a fortnight ago. The latest four have not been named yet.
The triplets born last fortnight to the ewe, “Fifty”, have been named Edwina, Elliot and Eli.

NDIS Supported School Transport discussion paper out now
As the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is rolled out across Australia, stakeholder feedback is being sought to inform how supported school transport could work in the NDIS or whether current arrangements should be retained. Visit www.engage.dss.gov.au and click on the NDIS Supported School Transport tab to have your say.
To allow time for governments to consider the outcomes of the consultation process, the Queensland Government will continue to deliver school transport assistance for students with disability until at least 31 December 2019.
P&C News
Term 2 has almost come to an end. The P&C have had a very successful 11 weeks because of the committed support of parents, grandparents, guardians, staff and students of the school.
Paul Kelly & Friends Concert
Thank you so much to the wonderful volunteer parents and students who gave up their time to scan arm bands in Dirranbandi. This was a fun afternoon and ran smoothly. We are yet to find out how much the P&C will receive for our time.
Back to the 80's Musical
A profit of $1500 was made from our efforts running the bar and selling food. Everyone involved should be very proud. The musical was a wonderful showcase of our students and school. Thank you again to all who made this a success.
Catering - Homebake
Michelle has been overwhelmed and extremely grateful for the yummy homebake that has been received for our recent catering jobs. Michelle's words were 'It really makes such a big difference with catering to have such variety of tasty eye-pleasing sweets. You can't buy anything at the shop that compares.' Thank you to all that took the time to make this possible.
Winter uniforms
Bettina and I spent a morning stocking all winter uniforms in correct sizes and into sealed, plastic containers. These have been labelled and in order to help Michelle and Shelly access the uniforms with more ease.
Happy holidays
I wish you all a relaxing and safe break over the July school holidays. We have an exciting Term 3 ahead with many items to focus on. We will welcome our new principal, John Lofthouse, to the school. John is looking forward to attending our P&C meetings and introducing himself to you.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
