Year 7 French
Over the past few weeks, students have completed a written assignment where they wrote a letter to a French penpal describing their Australian school timetables. Throughout the term, the Year 7s have been looking at the differences and similarities between Australian and French schools and were shocked to discover that French students attend school from 8am - 4:30pm most days! Our focus currently is learning about sports and hobbies, before we sit our final French assessment for the year next week!

Year 7 HPE

7A and 7B versed each other in a game of volleyball as part of their HPE assessment. The students showed great sportsmanship and enthusiasm whilst refining their movement skills for volleyball. The competition was tense with 7A winning by 4 points.
Home Ec News
Last Thursday, Year 10 students enjoyed a Christmas lunch for the end of their “Celebrations” unit.
A delicious glazed, baked ham with spinach potato bake and a beetroot, apple and walnut salad followed by cooked-in-the-cloth Christmas pudding with caramel sauce, brandy butter and ice cream, ensured everyone was seriously full at the end of the meal. Mrs Jodi Hyland, Mrs Lucille Acton and Rikki Hazard joined us and Ms Ella Harrison and Nikki Proud had take away meals to thank these people for assisting in cooking classes throughout the year. This term, students made a variety of Christmas treats in the kitchen and experimented with Christmas craft.
Year 9 Home Ec have completed assessment for the year. They are to be commended on being organised with Tuesday cooking this semester (thanks parents and siblings) and for successfully working with such a large class in limited space. They were a nice bunch of students to work with.
Year 8 Home Ec made their final dish, mini quiches yesterday however, there are a few students who still have assessment cookery to complete. Students will miss the taste testing of the Monday demonstration lessons and the “free lunch” of Thursday cookery. Hopefully they will have learnt enough safety, hygiene and organisational skills to be able to continue cooking over the holidays.
Year 8 French
Students have been learning about French foods this term, before recently switching over to talk about French schools and their school uniforms. Students are currently working on writing a letter to a French penpal that describes their school uniform and what they wear on a day-to-day basis. Safe to say, 8B is envious that French students can wear free dress to school every day!

Year 9 Digital Technology
Year 9 Digi Tech students have had lots of fun over the last couple of weeks, programming their Spheros to compete in a number of challenges. Highlights and student favourites included Hot Potato, a mini golf course, and a maze. Currently, students are designing and building chariots as part of their end-of-term assessment which will be tested in the chariot arena this week and next.

Year 9 Ag
Our year 9 Ag students headed to Toowoomba on Monday last week as part of the HarvestEd STEM program that they have engaged with in Semester 2. Students arrived at USQ and toured the agricultural facilities including looking at some of the machinery that USQ are developing in partnership with John Deere USA that will potentially be sent up to space to grow crops on Mars!
On Tuesday, our students worked alongside students from Rockhampton, Injune, Wallambilla and Cunnamulla where they engaged in a range of critical thinking and problem solving activities with a focus on sustainability, access, and food security. The students then faced their nerves and presented their projects to a panel of entrepreneurial experts. The students have worked on their projects all term to propose a solution to an agricultural problem. Some of the problems addressed included farmers mental health, destruction caused by feral pigs, increasing carp population and the need for more women in agricultural careers. To celebrate the students success, they were treated to a trip to the cinemas to view the new Black Panther movie in 3D!
The students displayed excellent behaviour and were commended by the HarvestEd coordinators and representatives from the Department of Education for Rural and Remote Learning. Well done to all involved!

Drug Arm Roma
The Year 7s were lucky enough to have two visitors from Drug Arm Roma to talk to the students about the impact of alcohol and other drugs including vaping.

P&C News
This year has been a year of new beginnings – first there was a change of leadership in the P&C. We thank our predecessors for the excellent foundations built by them over the past years.
I know our new Vice President Nicole Proud and I are truly thankful for our Treasurer Ruth Beeson for staying with us as she is a constant source of guidance and advice. We also appointed a Fundraising officer - Candice Cross – who has done a fantastic job this year as you will soon hear.
Then there was the changing school leadership and we thank Acting Principal Rob Nowlan for stepping into the breach.
And then last but by no means least the P&C introduced EFTPOS. Not only is this used at the Tuckshop, but also at our fundraisers making it much easier for our customers and our volunteers. In fact, the Tuckshop is doing so well under our kitchen wizards Maria Olive and Amy Mutch that we are on track to make more than $5000 profit for the year. Along with the profit from Tuckshop, we raised $3450 catering at the Thallon Truck Pull, $2400 catering for the Footy Banquet, $1200 running the Balonne Athletics Canteen and $1000 manning the bar at the School Formal. The P&C also received a very welcome $4980 donation from Busted Bale. Thanks to Scott Brimblecombe, Craig Saunders and Qld Cotton’s Ben Suttor for that boost to our bank account! As a result of this income we have been able to provide the school with an agricultural trailer valued at $5000, $510 toward awards tonight and $250 toward PBL Switch remotes and games.
I would like to thank all the wonderful volunteer parents, carers and staff who have contributed to our success this year and look forward to seeing many more of you at our next fundraiser.
Although all our profit will be returned to the school, we are seeking a grant writer to come on board to help secure funds for essential structural items at the school such as permanent shade and upgrades to the Tuckshop. If you are interested, please contact me.
Also keep your eye on the P&C Facebook page for dates to purchase uniforms next year. Our next meeting, the AGM followed by monthly meeting, will be held on 20 February 2023 at 6pm in the school Library. All are welcome to attend and help us plan how we will help the school next year!
