From HOD Senior Secondary
Positive Behaviour for Learning update
As a PBL school we are always looking at ways to give students positive feedback for their learning, behaviour, attitude and effort.
This term we are excited to announce our new Zingers, they are a more compact version but the colours are remaining the same.
- Blue – 1 and Yellow – 2, these are from teachers for displaying our PBL behaviours.
- Orange – 5 and Green – 10, these are issued by HODs, Deputy or Principal for going above and beyond.
- Lilac – 5 from Principal and Deputy only.
We are excited when we have so many students banking their Zingers every Friday in the Library. It is so wonderful to see students receiving prizes in recognition of their great work.
Some Fridays there are also added incentives to bank some Zingers which has meant that some students who wouldn’t normally be involved have started to.
If you have any ideas how Zingers could be incorporated into the community we would love to hear them. There is a PBL meeting on 1 June if you would like to come along and see what it’s all about. Please email daddi4@eq.edu.au if you will be attending.
St George Show News
It was fantastic to see so many students and staff participating in a number of events at the local show, from riding in ring events and show jumping, the motorbike gymkhana, cooking and art sections, Miss Showgirl and our Show Team showing our cattle and sheep with many receiving a place.
Thank you to Annette McLean and Nicole Proud who set up and presented the High School display beautifully and Dave Campbell for helping take items over to the show and returning them. The student’s work was on display from a variety of subjects as well as photos of students participating in classes, camps, sports days, community events etc.

Congratulations to Miss Jessica Embrey who was named Miss Showgirl and 2021 Year 12 student Yasmin Sullivan was named as Runner up. Well done!

Mrs Karen McKechnie was also a winner at the show being named the overall winner in the cooking section for her date loaf. Well done!
NAPLAN
This week the Year 7 and 9s participated in NAPLAN and were looked after with a cooked breakfast of bacon and eggs each morning by our wonderful staff.
11/12 Sport & Recreation Studies
Sport and Recreation Studies
This term students are undertaking a unit of study in Lawn Bowls. On Friday 29 March students had their first session at the St George Lawn Bowls club where they met club members Arthur Baker and Mark Watt and club president Vera Vaughan. Students were given a tour of the facilities, investigated the clubs code of conduct and some common first aid/risks associated with the sport of Lawn Bowls before being given an exclusive lesson on how to play. Students will continue to participate in a number of sessions at the club before hosting a community competition towards the end of the term.
Miss April McLaren

8A English
This term is 8A English we are focusing on Creation Myths as a stimulus to develop our creative writing skills. Not only are students looking at the plot and words used to bring the stories to life but they are also increasing their visual literacy skills by pulling apart illustrations focusing on colour, placement, emphasis, movement, lines and shapes. In a recent lesson students were asked to create a visual representation of one aspect of the Dreamtime story ‘The Rainbow Serpent’. Here are a few of the talented, and very different, representations of a specific event in that story.

Wellbeing Focus – Physical Activity
Wellbeing is central to our health and overall happiness. As a wellbeing initiative, each newsletter we will focus on a different aspect of wellbeing that you and your student can use in their everyday life in order to become healthier and happier. This week’s focus is on the importance of physical activity.
A balanced student lifestyle places equal emphasis on all their elements of wellbeing. Research has revealed that active and positive people are more likely to achieve what they set out to do and are less ill.
All students should try to include some physical activity every day. Quality outdoor leisure activities with friends and family which are light and bright and frequent opportunities to have fun and laugh with others encourage positive emotions. Happy students enjoy and flourish on their school journey.
Some quality physical activities include a brisk walk, run, swim or bike ride, yoga, pilates, gym workout, skateboarding, playing sport, dancing, gymnastics, resistance training etc.
So let’s ditch the electronic devices and try to include some more physical activity into each and every day.

Rural Inspire Brisbane

The Rural Youth Ambassadors is based on a conversation that many have had in relation to rural and remote education. That being; On one hand, education sectors outline that young people in rural and remote communities are less represented in tertiary education, and generally perform to a lesser level than their urban peers. However, on the other hand, many of the top CEOs across Australia grew up in a rural or remote community and, in a sense, are being overrepresented. So, the question the program considers throughout, is how is it that rural and remote young people achieve such prominent vocational and personal outcomes and yet their education outcomes and participation in higher education is lower than their urban peers. This week four of our senior students travelled to Brisbane to attend the Rural program enjoying many activities which were very informative.
