POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING FOCUS

Welcome back to all Students
7 February 2022
Let’s have a great year!

Balonne Shire Australia Day Award Recipients

St George State High School had a number of students nominated for awards at the Balonne Shire Australia Day ceremony. Congratulations to Year 9 student Lillian Stenhouse who won the Junior Sports Award and 2021 graduated student Yasmin Sullivan who won Young Citizen of the Year. Well done to everyone!

Public Health Direction

Do students in high school need to wear a mask?

Yes! All high school students, including those who are under 12 years of age, need to wear a mask unless they are seated indoors or outdoors or are able to maintain a 1.5 metre distance from others.

Do students travelling to and from school on a bus need to wear a mask?

Yes! All High School students need to wear a mask while traveling in the bus. Primary school students are exempt, however, are encouraged to wear a mask should they wish to.

Do Staff need to be fully vaccinated?

Yes! Anyone who works in, undertakes an educational placement in, or volunteers in a school, early childhood centre (such as a kindergarten) or childcare centre is considered a worker in an education setting.

  • This includes:
  • teachers
  • teacher aides
  • cleaners
  • administration officers, business managers, schools officers, IT staff, agricultural assistants, and all school support staff
  • an employee of a company that supplies services to an education setting, such as plumbing, electrical and building services
  • a contract teacher or early childhood instructor engaged for relief work
  • volunteers who assist in delivering support activities and services in education settings such as tuckshop, reading programs, etc.
  • chaplains, entertainers or support workers visiting education settings
  • university students on practical placement, school work experience or traineeship in education settings including early childhood education and care settings
  • psychologists or therapists providing support for individuals in education settings
  • a dentist in a school dental clinic
  • identified staff within regional and central offices who are required to be present in a school as part of their work duties, i.e. where attendance at a school is necessary to fulfil the requirements of their job.

Schools are considered high risk environments in terms of COVID-19 and as such this new direction applies to a broad range of work arrangements (e.g. contractors, volunteers).

Our school is required to ensure that any workers who come on-site during school hours have evidence of their vaccination status and report to the front office for check in purposes upon arrival.

From Deputy Principal Nicole Hyland

I hope everyone was able to enjoy the Christmas and New Year period and spend time with friends and family. This is an unusual start to the school year, but one that we will all work through together. I can assure you that all teachers are working very hard on planning and preparation for the year ahead and are looking forward to when students return to school again for learning.

Year 11 & 12

The Year 11 and 12 students will commence learning from home next Monday (31st January). Teachers will communicate directly with students via a mix of technology. The first lesson will start at 9am. Students need to complete set work given by the teachers.

Swimming carnival

Please mark on your calendar the date of the swimming carnival: Friday 11 February. Of course, this is with the understanding that we cannot predict the future at the moment in terms of COVID restrictions.

Not returning

If your student is not returning to St George SHS this year we need to know. If they are enrolled at another school please phone the office and let them know. Students can leave school when they finish year 10 or turn 16. However, they must also be employed (minimum of 25 hrs/week), or be involved in further study or training. The school requires evidence of this before students can be removed from the roll. Please call the office if you require assistance with this.

From HOD Senior Deb Addison

Another interesting start to the new year. Teachers of year 11 and 12 classes have been working tirelessly to make sure that resources for the online week of learning next week are ready to go. I am excited to be back from maternity leave and to start my fifth year here at St George SHS. I continue to learn so much about the town, school and students and I am looking forward to continuing my journey as HOD Senior Schooling. Thank you to all who organised meetings to collect laptops and textbooks. I will continue to meet with people next week, however classes do start at 9am on Monday so it is best for your student to have access before then so they can have a successful start to the year. With this extended break and unusual start to the year it is expected that all students return to school on February 7th on time. Attendance is always important to students success but this term more so as it is shorter, however we still have a lot of teaching to do. I look forward to working with you and your students and hope that they enjoy coming to school every day. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me via the office or at daddi4@eq.edu.au

  • payment by instalments of one third (⅓) before the end of week 2 in Terms 1, 2 and 3.

Parents will be invoiced for the student resource scheme and any applicable subject levies and these must be paid for. If you have difficulty paying the account, please contact the Business Manager to discuss payment options including payment plans and CentrePay deductions (Centrepay no longer offered for uniforms).

Please Note: Parents who have not paid the instalment due each term by the end of Week 2 nor have a payment agreement in place, can expect their student/s will not be permitted to participate in any extracurricular or end of year activities and may not be allocated additional scheme resources.

New Staff

Sam Holloway – My name is Sam Holloway and I’m a new graduating teacher from Brisbane and will be teaching Mathematics, Science and Technology classes. My hobbies include computers, strategy games, history and reading.

Benjamin Murphy - Hi, my name is Benjamin Murphy and I'm new to St George SHS this year. I have moved from Maroochydore SHS on the Sunshine Coast and will be teaching Visual Art From 7 to 12 as well as English and Humanities for Year 7. Some of my hobbies include digital art, skateboarding, surfing and playing video games. I will definitely be missing the beach and my four pets back home but am looking forward to the next two years and the experiences I will have here at St George.

Chris Mellifont – My name is Chris Mellifont and I am the new Ag Assistant at St George SHS. My family and I moved back to St George in 2020. Previous to this role I had been working as a farm hand/stock work for over 5 years. I am excited to be working at the school and look forward to the year ahead.

April McLaren – I am Miss April McLaren and I will be teaching Year 8-10 HPE, Year 9 Science and Year 11/12 Rec Studies. I have spent the last four years teaching at Dirranbandi P-10 State School and am originally from Fremantle in Western Australia. Before teaching I was a personal trainer and beach sprinter through my local Surf Lifesaving club. I have played Rugby 7s for the Frilly Fillies for the last three seasons and am looking forward to taking up netball and squash this year. I am looking forward to teaching in a slightly bigger school and getting to know many more faces throughout the year. I have an open door policy and am always available to assist and support students and parents where needed. I am available via email axmcl5@eq.edu.au and over the phone (07 - 4620 8222). I wish everyone a great start to the school year for 2022.

Georgia Tatham-Joyce – My name is Georgia Tatham-Joyce and I transferred from Brisbane to work at St George SHS for the next couple of years. This year, I will be teaching French, Drama, History, Digital Tech, English Extension and PE. I love dancing, baking and reading, and look forward to working and living in a small community.

Jeremy Synot – My partner along with our 18 month old son have moved over from Redcliffe during the school holidays. Most recently, I have been teaching at Deception Bay State School (Primary), but previous to that I was a high school teacher for 5 years. My main teaching areas are English and Humanities, which I will be teaching this year. In my spare time, I love hanging out with my family and having a hit of golf on the weekends. Additionally, being a former Victorian, I am a very big AFL fan - so hopefully I will find another fan whilst living here in St George.

Deanne Harris – I'm a Drama/English Teacher, however, I am the new DRT here at St George SHS. I've been teaching forever, but have had a concurrent career as a group fitness trainer (also a PT) for over 20 years. I also used to be a Federal Police Officer (AFP). My children are the focus of my life. My partner is still living in Brisbane, he's a Police Officer (QPS). Love training, walking, swimming, baking and holidaying with my kids. I also love to decorate and make a house a home.

Alison Fisher – Role: Cluster HoSES (Head of Special Education). My previous positions/Roles were classroom teacher at St George State Primary School and Community Engagement Teacher. My interests are reading and spending time with friends and family. I am looking forward to new learning and working with new people.

Year 12 General English

Year 12 General English students remember you need to have finished your novel before remote learning starts on the 31 January 2022.

Home Ec News

It would be lovely to think that Year 9 & 10 Home Economics students are busy at home whipping up meals and snacks to use the great kitchen skills they learnt last year.

A few reminders – Year 9 HEc is a big class and will need to select from teacher provided recipes for Term 1 rather than individual choice. You will probably start providing your OWN ingredients from Week 5 onwards, with Tuesday Period 2 as our cooking day.

Year 10 HEc will still go ahead with the two planned Textiles projects – covering a folder with fabric and decorating to provide recipe storage and making an apron that you can use for kitchen work or give as a gift. Since we are studying “Sustainable Textiles” our projects will be made from existing fabric. PLEASE DO NOT buy new fabric. Look for tablecloths, curtains or pieces of cloth big enough for the job – ask relatives and friends or search at the Op Shops for something thicker and hard wearing. Recipe folders (A4) will be provided so only a small amount of fabric will be needed for this task. There is fabric at school that you may choose from for each of the projects.

Stay well
