POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING FOCUS Being Respectful - |
From The Principal
Celebration Parade next week
Next week we celebrate the great success of our students over Term 3. At this time, we recognise students who have achieved an attendance rate of 95% or better and those who have had zero behaviour records over the same timeframe of Term 3 2021.
This means there are 52 (23.7%) students who have achieved this attendance rate and 73 (33.3%) who have had exemplary behaviour. Congratulations to all these students who will receive certificates next week.
Project Update
As many will be aware, we have been fortunate to have two exciting projects at this school over the next 18 months. The first is the new multisport indoor facility that will be constructed on our front oval. The second is the redevelopment of the Agriculture areas – new classrooms, hay shed, tack room, new cattle and sheep yards and a new access road from Victoria Street and the building of a new Manual Arts facility. The anticipated completion dates of these projects are mid-year 2023.
Retention Project
We have been selected to be part of Regional Plan to look at ways and opportunities to improve the retention of our students from year 7 – 12. This is an exciting opportunity to hear from staff, students and parents about ways to maximise a student’s progression through the entire phase of secondary earning. More information to follow as we develop our plan.

Principal’s Recognition Award Nomination
The Principal’s Recognition Award is an award that is presented on Awards Night 18 November. The purpose of the award is to appreciate the achievements of students beyond school life. Some students display a passion for life in a variety of sporting, musical, cultural or volunteering roles outside of school.
In the past the award has been given to students who for example, have represented Queensland in sport, or who have excelled in other sports or extra curricular activities.
St George SHS often relies on parents and students to inform them of such outstanding achievements that occur outside of school.
If you know of a student that you believe should be recognised for this award please write a brief description of their achievements and email it to the school by 22 October. Please send it to the Deputy Principal: nhyla2@eq.edu.au
Formal
The cars (loader, paddy wagon, bus and golf buggy) were revving and the gowns were sparkling in St George on Thursday, September 16 as the Year 12 formal took place.
There were abundant cheers and lots of excitement from the crowd gathered at the Golf Course as the young men and women arrived to celebrate their 13 years of schooling. This event signifies reaching the end of their years at school and celebrates the transition to adult and independent life.
A touching moment on the night remembered a student, whose memory is held closely by our Year 12s and community. There was a silent recognition of Williki Collins, embodied by the lighting of a candle.
Our students scrubbed up and looked their absolute best, Cha-Cha’ing the night away!

Cancer Council’s Ponytail Project - $9368- raised

Students from Year 12 and staff members participated in the Cancer Council’s Ponytail Project. The Ponytail Project is a fundraising campaign that started in 2015 at St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School in Brisbane. The girls at this school launched the ‘Ponytail Project’, believing that chopping off their ponytails was a small price to pay to support those impacted by cancer. Originally they hoped to fundraise an original target of $2000 to donate along with 20cm+ ponytails that will go towards making wigs for cancer patients. The girls currently have raised $9368. The girls participating were Heather Wilesmith, Lily Brimblecombe, Carleigh Ross, Stella O’Toole, Haley Moloney, Yasmin Sullivan, Anna Moloney, Paige Clark and Kate Southern with teaching staff Kym Weatherall, Kaila Basile and Vanessa Beavan. Well done to everyone involved and thankyou to those who have kindly donated towards the cause.

SPORTS NEWS
Good luck to Dylan Hart and Oliver Lockwood as they head to Bundaberg to State Titles next week for Cricket.
St George Campdraft Team
Make Top 10 in Queensland
Last weekend, eight students travelled to Dalby to participate in the Ariat High School Campdraft Percentile Cup. The weekend saw 270 students from 34 schools compete over 3 days. Students from all over Queensland travelled from as far away as Rockhampton & Mundubbera, with some parents travelling from as far away as Mt Isa to bring their boarding school student’s horses to the competition.
Students representing St George were Bobby-Jo Tattam (Yr 12), Matilda Fry (Yr 11), Jackson Halliday & Ashleigh Ferguson (Yr 10), Sharon Pearce (Yr 9), Sophie Kings & Sam Rollins (Yr 8) and Corey Rollins (Yr7).
The competition consisted of all students competing in a two round competition with the top 10 riders competing in an individual final. All schools also competed for the overall highest scoring team. After nearly 770 runs, the top 10 riders then competed in the individual final. Team Captain, Bobby-Jo & her horse Willdraft Just Sure, placed 11th overall, unfortunately missing out on going through to the final by one point. This is a fantastic result in such a huge competition.
The winning team of the weekend was Rockhampton Grammar School. The St George team are proud to have placed 9th overall (it was a very tight competition with only seven points separating 1st -10th), making the top 10 is a fabulous achievement and we could not be prouder.
A huge thank you must go to our Team Manager, David Tattam, for helping our riders over the weekend. Also, thank you to the parents for making the trip to Dalby and ensuring our riders had everything needed to compete. A big thank-you must also go to the Bollon & St George Campdraft Associations for sponsoring the team saddlecloths.
The Campdraft team would also like to wish Bobby-Jo the very best as she finishes Year 12. Bobby-Jo is one of the original three members that started the team back in 2018. Her commitment to the team and her leadership will be missed, but we wish her and her horses the very best at future campdraft competitions.
Finally, thank you to the eight students who represented their school with pride & dignity. You all showed amazing sportsmanship, by not only supporting your team mates but cheering on riders from other teams. You should all be extremely proud of yourselves and it was an honour to be able to see you all have a great time representing your school in the sport you all love so much.
Until next year,
Bec Halliday
Team Co-ordinator
