2. YEAR 11 & 12 EXAMS

Year 12’s have been doing mock exams spread over Week 10, Term 3 to Week 2, Term 4. These mock exams prepare students to sit the external exams later in Term 4.

Year 11’s will be starting their exams on 26 October through to 3 November.

3. NAPLAN

The Year 7 & 9 NAPLAN reports were posted out to families last week. This report will show the individual results for your student in reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy. This was the first year that students did the NAPLAN test online.

4. TAX FILE NUMBERS – Year 9

A number of Year 9 students are now working after school, on weekends and holidays. This is a great opportunity for these students, and St George is lucky enough to have businesses that support young people in employment.

To assist Year 9 students with this, on Friday 8 October (Friday of Week 1 in Term 4), a JP will be available to cite documents so that the form can be completed and sent away.

If your student is aged over 16 they will need three (3) current documents. If your student is under 16 they will require two (2) current documents.

Examples of documents include:

Primary documents
Australian full birth certificate (not an extract);
Australian passport;
Australian citizenship certificate;
Foreign passport.

Secondary documents
Medicare card;
Account statement from an Australian bank;
Current student identification card;

If your student is under the age of 16, secondary documents can include one of the following, which must be less than one year old and issued by an Australian government accredited education authority:

Secondary examination certificate;
Record of achievement;
Examination report.

Students have already been given the tax file number application forms to take home with them.

Please fill in these forms and either allow the student to bring the form and documentation into the school on Friday 8 November, or parents/guardians may bring them to the office on this day.

From Senior HOD

Congratulations to Grace Waters who has been successful in her application for the UQ Young Achievers Program. This is a highly prestigious program that aims to extend and provide support to students pursuing an ATAR, with high academic achievement, during Year 11 and 12. Grace will join Michelle and Ellsy in Year 12 who also complete the Young Achievers Program. She will attend a UQ experience in both Year 11 and 12 and gain access to mentors, contacts and support through the university. She will also receive a scholarship of $1000 for each semester of Year 11 and 12 and $7000 a year if she attends UQ post-secondary. This is a valuable program that St George SHS has had students involved with since 2015. We are very proud of Grace and are excited to see what she achieves in the future!

Congratulations to Heather and Yasmin who have both been successful in their applications to the University of Southern Queensland Early Entry program! Yasmin has been accepted to study nursing and Heather to study business. Both students have been a credit to St George State High School throughout their time with us. Well done girls!

Aspire2Health certificates - On 26 August, Piyush, Tom, Maddy and Christina travelled to Roma to participate in a Health Pathways workshop that was run by the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training. The day was also attended by St Johns Roma and Roma State College, and students had the opportunity to participate in a range of activities including suturing ‘wounds’, applying casts, speech therapy activities, and an ambulance simulation. This was a fantastic day which students thoroughly enjoyed. They represented our school extremely well. Well done to these students.

New Staff

Mrs Tracee Pesudovs-Ward - I have been teaching since 2007 and am a literacy specialist and was also a support teacher for literacy and numeracy for 3 years. I taught 20 schools a reading and literacy program called Project 600 online. I have also taught dance for over 30 years and taught the Year 7s and 6s for graduations for many years. I recently completed a Master of Education degree showing that you can continue to learn even when you are older and have been working for a long time.

Music Workshop

On 1 and 2 September, students attended the cluster Instrumental Music Junior Music Workshop which was held at St George State School.

The camp involved 39 students from different schools including St George, Dirranbandi, Thallon, St George State High, Begonia, Bollon and St Patricks. The students worked and performed extremely well and had accomplished three difficult band pieces by the end of the two days.

A concert was held on Thursday for parents and St George State School with all students really enjoying the afternoon of music.

A big thank you to all the students who participated for making it an amazing camp and also a big thank you to all the parents who car pooled kids and for your support at home.

Down At The Ag Plot

The Ag students were lucky enough to witness and learn about artificial insemination from Chinchilla Droughtmaster stud owner Dave McCabe. Mr McCabe spent the day educating our students about the reproductive system of cattle and the science of artificial insemination. Students were involved in hands-on activities with models and real organ samples. A huge thank you to Mr McCabe for coming along and sharing his knowledge on this subject.
