POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING FOCUS Being Responsible
- |
From Deputy Principal
Parents and Guardians are reminded that if they need to see their student they must come into the office and sign in. All visitors to the school must sign in at the office for safety reasons. If you want to deliver lunches, please drop them off in the office.
Also, since the advent of Covid, visitors must check in with the Qld check in app. The QR Code is located on the door leading into the office.
“When a person is diagnosed with COVID-19, Queensland Health will conduct contact tracing. Public health officers will assess the movements of the person with COVID-19 while they were infectious and determine who in the community are considered ‘close contacts’. Information collected at the businesses about customers and staff will assist in identifying and contacting the relevant close contacts. This will assist public health officers to contain and respond to the spread of COVID-19 within the community.
By using the Check In Qld app you’ll be:
- able to check in to participating businesses without having to enter your details each time
- protecting your own personal information – data is stored by the Queensland Government and only used for contact tracing if needed
- helping make contact tracing faster, more reliable and complete.”

School Opinion Survey 2021
Thank you to all the parents/caregivers, students and school staff who completed this year’s School Opinion Survey. We look forward to sharing our survey results with you when we receive our school report later this year.
Celebration Parade
Last week the school celebrated the great work of our students over Semester 1. The school celebrates student excellence in a number of areas of school like following the completion of Semester 1 2021. Academic Excellence – Where a student has averaged a “B” across all their subjects. Academic Improvement – Where the level of achievement received this Semester was at least one rung improvement over the result received in Semester 2 2020. Excellent Effort & Behaviour – To receive this certificate a student has to have been awarded a rating of “Excellent” in all but one subject they study. That exception cannot be less than a rating of “Very Good”. Outstanding Attendance – These students have an attendance of 95% for the Semester.
In total, 137 students were awarded 258 certificates to recognise their improvement and excellence. This represents 63% of our total student body and is a tremendous result and affirmation of the whole school. Congratulations to all those students who received awards last week.

Home Ec News
Year 10 students have been revising Textiles knowledge and practising sewing skills, most haven’t used since Year 8, to repair, revamp and complete aprons for use in the kitchen. Next they will cover a folder with fabric and decorate the cover to suit intended purpose.
The “shy” Year 10 Home Ec group wanted to show off their aprons they have been making as their first practice task.
Year 8 students are well under way with producing a water bottle cooler and have learnt to use the machines quickly and competently.
Year 7 have completed their indigenous design unit and are preparing to head into the kitchen for the rest of the term with a demonstration lesson on Mondays, cooking with a partner on Tuesdays and healthy eating class work during Wednesday lessons.
Year 9 students have too large a class to be able to offer drinks for sale to staff, which Semester 1 students really enjoyed. They will have the opportunity to practise all drink varieties in some lessons to improve their skills. Students need to supply their own cooking ingredients (and containers to take home or take out for lunch) from Wednesday 4 August. They have spent the last two practical lessons becoming familiar with kitchen layout and routines and making drinks and dishes as a group.
The Home Ec vegetable patch has grown since the beginning of year planting, containing parsley, shallots, chives, rosemary, coriander, dill and a few vegetables that students are able to use in their cookery lessons.

Year 11/12 Ag Practices
Last week the Year 11/12 Ag Practices class got to test out the new sheep catcher to trim our sheep’s hooves. The new device is enabling students to be further involved in the maintenance of our school flock.

Year 10 HPE -Archery

Year 9 Science
Year 9 science students have been learning about body systems – like the digestive system and the excretory system – and how they work together to keep us alive. In Monday’s lesson, they dissected a pig’s kidney to observe the internal structure and see its parts in real life.

Year 9 ITD
The Year 9 ITD students got to test the quality of their handmade fishing reels this week.

Year 7 Geography
Year 7 students are learning about all things water this term. Focusses for this unit include water processes, fresh water as a limited resource, climate graphing and choropleth mapping. Students have reviewed the water cycle and learnt more information about each crucial step in this process. Well done to 7A for making a fantastic display water cycle, and a huge thanks to Egypt for her help piecing it all together. It is currently a work in progress!

A massive thank you to Balonne Shire Council and Mitre 10 for their donation of 15 Kings Park Callistemons for our students to plant. Thank you to Council representatives Jane Cornish and Olivia Hoolihan for attending the event and lending a hand. National Tree Day encourages everyone to get their hands dirty and play a role in protecting our environment.

Qld Ballet Visit
Queensland Ballet’s Education Teaching Artists visited St George SHS on Thursday 5 August. Students enjoyed learning about Ballet history and technique. The history and evolution of ballet was incorporated into the teaching of this ballet technique class, adapted for various levels or experience. Students built on their technique and ballet vocabulary throughout the class to culminate in the learning of three pieces of adapted repertoire from different eras. In the second session students were taught the physics of ballet when partnering. Students were guided through the basics of partnering, exploring counterbalance, base of support, centre of gravity and weight sharing. These skills will then be integrated into the learning of a duet from a modern ballet from QB’s repertoire. What a wonderful experience for our students.
