From The Principal

Welcome back to a very busy Term 3! I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the significant number of students across all year levels who will receive certificates of recognition for their efforts in Semester One. The tables below tell a great story:

This data comes from an examination of Semester 2 2020 reports and comparing these results to that awarded to students in Semester 1 2021. Thus, students improved their level of achievement in 150 subjects across all year levels. These students are to be congratulated for this fine effort.

This table recognised excellence. To receive an Academic award the student will have achieved an average of a “B” across all subjects. Effort and Behaviour awards are provided to students who have received an “Excellent” in all subjects with only one “Very Good”. Again, to see over 20% of all students being awarded a certificate to recognise their effort and behaviour across all subjects is something to celebrate. Well done to all students!

An attendance percentage of over 95% across the whole semester is something to be celebrated. We all recognise the huge correlation between attendance and achievement and it is worthy of note that over 20% of all our students fall into this category.

Across all subjects, all year level academic achievement (A-C results) were the highest in the past three semesters at 73.5%. The same result occurred when looking at EFFORT, where 88.2% achieved A-C.

These students will be acknowledged in our Celebration Parade happening next week.

Parent-teacher meetings will be held Wednesday 28 July. I encourage all parents and carers to book an appointment with the link below or contact the office to meet with the teachers of their student.

Queensland Ballet are visiting on Thursday 5 August to run two programs with our students. A letter regarding these events are available from the office.

Staff had a twilight meeting last Wednesday 21 July where we looked closely at moderation and differentiation.

Facilities Development:- Two significant projects have had their design brief signed off over the last week of Term 2:

The new Sport’s hall

Development of the Agriculture and Technology areas.

Both projects are due to be completed over the next 2 years and represent a capital injection of over $8M into the school. This is a tremendous opportunity for the school to move forward in our pursuit of quality education and improved outcomes for all our students.

Unit plans and assessment schedules:- are being developed by staff as we speak. The assessment calendar should be released by the end of next week.

Tuckshop:-The tuckshop will be closed on Thursday 29 July.

New Staff:- I am delighted to announce that Ms Ella Harrison has joined our staff to be a teacher in the area of special education.

Homework Centre:- We have been successful in our application to become a Homework Centre. This is a great initiative by the Government to support students and families with the after-school supervision of homework. A survey of times and days of operation will be distributed next week to gather this important information.

Think The Drink Year 12

Last week the Year 12 cohort participated in ‘Think The Drink’, an all day session about the risks of drugs, alcohol and driving as they prepare to leave school as young adults. The students listened to interesting and interactive presentations from drug and alcohol services, The Red Frogs, the St George Police, Life Flight and mental health awareness campaign, Livin’. Finally the St George Ambulance Service and Fire and Rescue demonstrated cutting a car open to highlight the risks of driving irresponsibility or under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The students enjoyed their day and found it educational and engaging.

Tertiary Tour

The Year 11 and 12 students enjoyed their day on Friday at USQ. They did a nursing/Healthcare simulation, and engineering class and did a tour of the residential campuses and were spoilt with a delicious lunch. In Brisbane students visited the Gallery of Modern Art and explored the city. Students enjoyed the Tertiary Studies Expo with lots of information to take home and a stop in at Gatton Ag College on the way home was also enjoyed.

From School Based Youth Health Nurse

Welcome back to Term 3; the year is flying by! Hope everyone had a restful holiday and is ready for another busy term.

To kick things off this term, we had our wonderful visiting mobile sexual health and women’s health clinical nurse consultant, Sharon Young, visiting this week. I had asked Sharon to return to the school to do sexual education with the year 10 and 11s which was on Tuesday July 20. Opt-out forms were sent out to families to advise of this.

Please keep in mind that Sharon is available to all members of the community over the age of 14 years. Sharon will be in the Community & Allied Health building at St George Hospital. Sharon covers a plethora of areas including sexual health testing, cervical screening, contraception and family planning information, breast and testicular examination and education, as well as countless other educational opportunities and information. Please phone 07 4620 2265 to make an appointment with Sharon.

This term, as well as sexual health education, I will be using my days at the school to discuss with all grades:

  • Bullying & resilience – managing it, and being aware of your actions in the school & community
  • The facts around smoking & vaping.
  • Depression & anxiety – asking for help and supporting those around you.
  • “Why am I always tired?”
  • “Why am I always sick?”

These are a few of the suggestions I have received from staff and students.

At the end of last term, we implemented the use of suggestion boxes in the school. One is in the staff room, available each school day, and the other outside my office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please feel free to send a written suggestion with your child, or my email is Theresa.Brennan@health.qld.gov.au. I am available on my work mobile, 0488 723 857.

I am looking forwards to hearing your suggestions!

Have a wonderful week!

  • Your School-Based Youth Health Nurse, Theresa

SPORTS NEWS

State Titles Cross Country - The schools little pocket rocket Sienna Beardmore competed at the State Titles for Cross Country over the weekend. It was a great but challenging experience with the course being very hilly and very windy. Sienna ran her 3km race on Sunday and was part of the South West relay team running another 1500km at Bill Patterson Oval in Ipswich. Well done Sienna!!
