POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING FOCUS Be Prepared - |
From The Principal
Many people may have seen information in the press lately about “e-cigarettes” and their uptake by young people. Our school nurse was able to locate this valuable resource from the Cancer Council providing parents with some information about this. I recommend it to all parents to read and become familiar with.

- set and achieve your learning goals in Years 11 and 12, and beyond
- include flexible and coordinated pathway options in your course of senior study

Queensland Ballet Coming To St George SHS – 5 August
Queensland Ballet coming to St George SHS
Queensland Ballet’s Education Teaching Artists will visit St George SHS on Thursday 5 August.
They want to spread the magic of ballet with people of all ages and abilities at In-school Workshops. Queensland Ballet invite young dancers from Year 7 to Year 12, to join them for a range of inclusive workshops that will get you moving and inspire your inner creativity.
No previous dance experience is required.
Session 1:
1:00-2:00pm
Ballet History and Technique
Year 7 – 12
The ideal introductory ballet workshop.
The history and evolution of ballet will be incorporated into the teaching
of this ballet technique class, adapted for various levels or experience.
Students will build on their technique and ballet vocabulary throughout the
class to culminate in the learning of three pieces of adapted repertoire
from different eras.
Session 1:
2:00-3:00pm
Partnering
Years 7 – 12
The physics of ballet.
Students will be guided through the basics of partnering, exploring
counterbalance, base of support, centre of gravity and weight sharing.
These skills will then be integrated into the learning of a duet from a
modern ballet from QB’s repertoire.
Numbers are limited in these sessions. A permission letter will be available at the office for any students who want to be involved.
Grade 9 Science
Over the past fortnight 9A have been enjoying investigating our new physics unit - Electricity - and have been creating circuits in series and parallel. They have been testing out conductors, insulators, measuring current, voltage and resistance, and discovering the chemical and energy changes that occur in batteries. The class has been enjoying a hands-on inquiry approach which aids in consolidating our knowledge of some challenging concepts associated with this unit!

What’s Cooking in Home Ec
It’s been a busy week in Home Economics. With the colder weather, Yr 9 students were kept busy preparing coffee and hot drinks for delivery to staff. Yr 9 & 10 both had their practical cookery test this week. 10’s did a typical meal from the country they had studied for their investigation and many people were enticed by the aromas of curries, Mexican dishes and Italian flavours wafting from the kitchen. Students are to be commended on their organisation and efficiency in producing delicious dishes. 9’s have been studying convenience foods and were tasked with presenting a 2 course meal using fresh & convenience foods to fit within the time constraints. There are some photos of their delicious dishes. They worked well on presentation and getting two dishes in limited time. If anyone has any ice cream containers with lids at home that they would like to donate it would be much appreciated.

State Touch Trials :- Jacob and Madison Hiles (13-15 SW Team) and Braxton Beardmore and Paige Clark (16-18 SW Team) participated this week at the State Touch trials at Camp Hill, Brisbane. A wonderful experience was had by all with friendships made for life. Well done everyone!

SW Cross Country:- Students made the long trip to Charleville to participate in the SW Cross Country trials last week. Students had to run either 3km, 4km or 6km depending on their age as well as under a certain time and be placed in the top six for SW selection. 3km run was:- Sienna Beardmore, Josie Small, Abigail Holt-Grundon, Christopher Neven, Cohan Neven and Katie Turnbull. 4km run was :- Nequwa Collins, Jacob Hiles, Aaden Taylor, Kallum Oliver, Sharon Pearce, Lillian Stenhouse. 6km run was:- Josiah Timmer. Congratulations to Christopher Neven, Cohan Neven, Sienna Beardmore and Jacob Hiles who were selected in the SW team and will compete in Ipswich 17-19 July.
Vicki Wilson Netball:- Last Friday saw 20 girls from Years 8-10 travel to Toowoomba for the annual Vicki Wilson netball carnival. We had been training for a few weeks after having a record number of girls try out for the team and they had committed brilliantly to their fitness and skills training.
We travelled down to Toowoomba on the Thursday afternoon on the bus, staying at the Koojawarren camp in Highfields. It was cold and Miss Weatherall did her best to scare the girls, but despite that, they were asleep within 15 minutes and woke up bright and early on Friday to braid their hair and get ready for the day. We had breakfast at the camp and arrived at Nell E. Robinson park by 8 am. There was no hiding from the cold wind all day, and there was little reprieve from the elements except to warm up and play netball!

It was a jampacked day, with either the juniors or seniors playing at all times. The juniors played a total of 10 games, winning 7 of them against Killarney, Dalby SHS, Harristown SHS, Goondiwindi SHS, Chinchilla Christian College, Millmerran, and, the sweetest moment… St John’s Roma as the last game of the day in a nail biting match, with the seniors cheerleading from the sidelines.
The seniors played 9 games against some very tough competition in their pool, winning 4 games against TACAPS, St Saviours, Pittsworth and Harristown. The last game of the day against Fairholme A was just too tough, so in the second half the three year 12 girls Anna Moloney, Paige Clark and Haley Moloney had fun and played out of their positions for their last game of school netball ever!

We will miss these three girls and their commitment to the team for the last six years, and their wonderful leadership at netball. They have grown into wonderful young people that we are proud to claim as St George SHS students. It was sad to have them hand back their dresses for the last time.
As always, the biggest thank you to coach, umpire and bus driver Kym Weatherall. You did not stop all day and never do! We appreciate you!
