POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING FOCUS Be Prepared - |
From Deputy Principal
Subject Selection - Year 11, 2022
Making decisions about the subjects and courses you take in Year 11 and 12 is an important step in planning your future.
Whether your student has plans after Year 12 that include further study, learning a trade or finding a job, the QCE lets you design a pathway that’s right for you.
St George SHS has started the process of working with the Year 10 students to help them think about their career goals, tailoring their learning to their abilities, interests and ambitions, mapping their pathway to a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) – Queensland’s internationally recognised senior schooling qualification.
To receive a QCE you need a set amount of learning, at a set standard, in a set pattern, and you must meet literacy and numeracy requirements.
There are lots of study options to choose from: QCAA subjects and courses, vocational education and training, school-based apprenticeships and traineeships, and other recognised learning such as uni subjects.
Have conversations with your Year 10 student about their future pathways. There are also a number of resources on the QCAA website for you to look at:
https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/
Year 10 students have already received a copy of the Senior Subject Information Booklet and I have conducted an initial survey to gauge what students are planning to do in 2022. Take the time to discuss the booklet with your student.
To enrol your student in to Year 11 in 2022, parents and students must complete a Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan with the school.
Your SET plan helps you:
- structure your learning around your abilities, interests and ambitions
- think about your education, training and career options after Year 12
- set and achieve your learning goals in Years 11 and 12, and beyond
- include flexible and co-ordinated pathway options in your course of senior study
- communicate with your parents/carers or teachers/careers counsellors about your post-school plans.
Important dates:
9 June – Subject information
session for parents. Will cover aspects of obtaining a QCE and an
ATAR.
24 June – SET planning for parents and
students.

Year 10 Parent Information
Parents are invited to attend an information session for students transitioning from Year 10 to Year 11 in 2022.
It is important that you are able to make informed decisions about your student’s future career pathway, and understand QCE, and ATAR.
Wednesday 9th June, 2021
4pm in the Library
If you cannot make this time, please notify the school.
Year 10 SET Plan Interviews
To enrol your student in to Year 11 in 2022, parents and students must complete a Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan with the school.
Your SET plan helps you:
- structure your learning around your abilities, interests and ambitions
- think about your education, training and career options after Year 12
- set and achieve your learning goals in Years 11 and 12, and beyond
- include flexible and coordinated pathway options in your course of senior study
- communicate with your parents/carers or teachers/careers counsellors about your post-school plans.
All year 10 students must complete a SET plan interview.
SET plan interviews will occur on Thursday 24 June, 2021.

Story Writing from Year 8B
It’s with great excitement that I present some excerpts of students’ writing from the practice creative story writing lessons in 8B English. (Mrs D-M)
Under the cover of darkness, the Pinewriter swept quickly and silently across the surface of the water towards the island of Energy. Slipping through the darkness and staying close to the shadows cast by the tall trees and buildings, he moved towards the Energy Emperor’s palace. He paused just outside the walls, gathered his strength, and at the speed of light went towards the tower that housed the Energy God. Just as the Energy God was nearly in his grasp he was hit by a bolt of light. Crumpling to the ground he turned to see the Emperor standing behind him. “I have been expecting you,” the Emperor said. “You have been hiding for a long time preserving your energy but you will not win. I have put a curse on you and you can only eat crystals from now on. See how you survive without rocks to build your strength!”

After two months, they have filled all the rockets with rubbish and they were ready to launch them into space. They have enough fuel to take the rockets and the rubbish to another solar system. It will be released into space never to return to earth.

Lava spewed up from below, burning the already charcoal ground. “Work!” the guards screamed. The lava blew a second time, making connection with my toes. I screamed in agony. “Harder!” they bellowed again. I stumbled to work, my feet burning, the lava had set solidly to my feet. I heard screams of terror coming from the cage above full of used, helpless slaves. “We are the slaves for the kings of this burning world. Pain, agony, and scorching heat is all you would find in this burning kingdom.” “Break!” they boomed. I walked in pain, dragging my stone feet, towards my chamber, I laid on the hard, burning ground, and pain had spread across my body, making it impossible to sleep. I lay on the scorching ground thinking of a different life -one where lava didn’t burn your toes, a place where everyone was equal, and a place where everyone was mortal. We slaves, are all mortal as our kings tell us, we will die as soon as our job is done, we will die if we don’t work, and we will die if we do anything to upset our kings.

The site came up, showing a symbol with three different colours, red, orange and blue. They all realised that the colours are all the same colours as the three they have. Woods said “Those are same as ours.”
Matt looked closely at the symbol. He pressed the middle of the symbol and suddenly the screen went black but the same symbol was in the middle with two boxes below it saying E-mail and Password. Woods said slowly “Should we put project 863 in the boxes?” He tried it but said “Error.” But before he tried again, a strike of lightning hit the ground. They ran out, only to see a person walking to the safe. Matt yelled out “Don’t Touch That!” The person heard him and took the safe. They all ran to the site of the crash but the man disappeared in a lightning strike. They all got there, to only see a note saying “Sychus” and a bottle. They walked back, only to see Sychus standing in the middle of the room. He threw three of the bottles, and when they hit the ground, they lit. Sychus suddenly disappeared. Matt said “That won’t be the last of him.”

ITD News
This term ITD and ESK have been busy with the introduction of our first group of Year 8 for 2021. Students have almost finished their toy trucks with most of the students working on their own design for the trailer. It is great to see them coming up with some awesome ideas. Year 9 ITD have just finished the sheet metal dustpan, where they have learnt to use the spot welder and pan break and are now onto making a toy maze out of timber using their own designs and ideas. Year 10 have finished the camping stools from term one and are in the process of designing and making metal garden rakes. This project introduces the students to the Mig and stick welders as well as grinders and wood lathe techniques. ESK has Year 11 and 12 working to design and produce a number of projects over the year. By the end of this year all students will have completed the BBQ, motorbike stand, folding shovel and tack hammer. These projects introduce students to fundamental concepts of engineering as well as design with a wide range of techniques from reading micro increments with callipers, turning on wood and metal lathes, using Mig and stick welders through to problem solving and finishing quality.
