POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING FOCUS Be Prepared - |
New Staff
Diana Maric:- My name is Diana Maric and I come from Brisbane. My husband and I have both decided that it would be a great idea to have a break from city life and come and experience what a small rural town and rural life brings.
I have been a contract and supply teacher in the Brisbane area for over a number of years. My favourite subjects include Art and English which I enjoy teaching very much.
Other things that I enjoyed doing up until most recently was Beekeeping. My husband and I took care of our 60 beehives at Jimboomba and have extracted much honey.
Eleanor Blanch:- Thank you very much to the many students, staff and parents who have extended to me a very warm welcome over the past four weeks. Since starting here this term I have really enjoyed getting to know lots of the students and catching up with quite a few who I taught in primary school.
For those of you who don’t know me, my family and I have lived in the district for 12 years and in St George town for the past 6 years. I have met many of you through our involvement in local community groups.
My role at St George State High School is a change of direction for me that is very exciting. I must thank Kylie Whitaker for showing me the ropes in Manual Arts. I hope to be able to support Kylie and her students as they continue their fantastic projects for the rest of this year.
Cancer Council’s Ponytail Project
The Year 12 girls of St George State High have decided to take part in the Cancer Council’s Ponytail Project. They will chop off their ponytails in Week 1 of Term 4. The girls are excited and are looking forward to the outcome! This project is a great opportunity to display the true qualities of a leader to the school and community. The Ponytail Project is a fundraising campaign that started in 2015 at St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School in Brisbane. Chopping off their ponytails was a small price to pay to support those impacted by cancer. The topic of cancer is important, yet sensitive, which is why the Year 12 girls are addressing such a subject. The girls hope to positively encourage others to be selfless and play their part in a society where cancer is the leading cause of death. In some way, shape, or form, each one of us are affected by cancer, some more than others. The girls are hoping to fundraise $2000 to donate to the Cancer Council, along with 20cm+ ponytails that will go towards making wigs for cancer patients. The rest of the Year 12s are also on board, willing to donate their time towards fundraisers. The girls participating are:- Lily Brimblecombe, Paige Clark, Dayna Colley, Anna Moloney, Haley Moloney, Stella O’Toole, Carleigh Ross, Kate Southern, Yasmin Sullivan and Heather Wilesmith. Visit St George SHS on the Cancer Council website.

Year 9 Maths
Last week the Year 9 class used the Rec Centre to work out Pythagoras Theorem -a2+b2=c2. The Pythagoras theorem is a mathematical law, which states the sum of squares of the lengths of the two short sides of the right triangle is equal to the square of the length of the hypotenuse.

Mrs Dowling-Manns Classes
Mrs. D-M’s classes this term are doing….
Year 8B:- English- the students are writing Creation narratives which involves reading and comprehending a variety of creation short stories to understand the text structures and language features that are used to develop characterisation, setting and plot in order to engage an audience. They will identify and explain authors' language and visual choices in illustrated short stories and understand how these choices are combined for particular purposes and effects. Stay tuned for some examples of the students’ work in the coming weeks.
During History lessons, we are learning about Japan under the Shoguns (c. 794 – 1867) in particular, the way of life in Shogunate Japan, including social, cultural, economic, and political features (including the feudal system and the increasing power of the shogun).
Year 10B History:- The students are investigating the struggles for human rights in depth. This will include how rights and freedoms have been ignored, demanded or achieved in Australia and in the broader world context.
Year 11/12:- This term’s unit will focus on play based learning (PBL) in early learning centres and activities that develop essential skills in childhood development. The students have to prepare a folio of a variety of play based activities suitable for a specific age group and create an original activity targeted at this age group.

Students in all year levels have made a great start to the term’s work.
Year 7 students have been examining design basics and the influence of Indigenous art and it’s influence on current design. They have had their first kitchen session and will be cooking with their partners on Tuesdays till the end of term.
Year 8 students have almost completed their sewing task producing a water bottle cooler. Although some were unsure of how well they could use the sewing machine, everyone is doing a good job of making a usable cooler. They will begin cooking sessions on Tuesdays from Week 6.
Year 9 students have started their investigation tracing the production of a food item from farm to table. They have been cooking dishes on Wednesdays from each of the main food groups, with some adventurous recipes successfully produced. Students are also enjoying making coffee and a variety of hot and cold drinks for staff, using the new coffee machine just purchased.
Year 10 students have also started their investigation into the cuisine of a country of interest. Their cooking sessions on Wednesdays focus around a particular region. They have produced dishes from SE Asia, Mediterranean countries and trial Japanese or Indian dishes next week. Due to their great behaviour and team work in a crowded kitchen, they are being rewarded with food tasting sessions in their theory class, sampling a variety of home-made dumplings, ravioli and gnocchi dishes, moussaka and pearl couscous, to name just a few. Students are keen to taste such a wide range of unfamiliar foods to improve both their knowledge and the variety of foods they may be more willing to cook with at home.
Smiles all round in H Block at present.
