From Deputy Principal
Cross Country
Congratulations to all the students involved in the cross country on the last day of term one. Thank you to all of the staff that assisted with the smooth running of the event. Without the staff present the cross country would not be able to take place.
ANZAC Day
A small ceremony was held at the school on Friday 23 April for all of the students and staff. The student leaders led the ceremony and I am very proud of how they conducted themselves. All of the students present at the ceremony were very respectful and a credit to their families, school and community. A school ANZAC ceremony has not been held for the last few years and I believe that this is an important tradition that should not be lost.
Thank you to all of the students and staff involved in the community ANZAC parade and ceremony. Again, all students represented the school with pride! Congratulations.
Uniform
Please be aware that term 2 & 3 are the terms that formal uniform does not have to be worn by students. Sports uniform is acceptable each day. Year Level Coordinators will still be checking uniforms and contacting parents where necessary. Thank you to all of the parents supporting the wearing of correct school uniform including jumpers. If there are any issues with wearing the correct uniform please feel free to contact myself at any time.
NAPLAN
The online NAPLAN test will occur for all Year 7 & 9 students (unless parents have withdrawn students) from the 11th – 14th May. The following week will be used to catch up with any students that have missed any part of the test. This is the first year that students from St George SHS will complete the test online. A trial of the online test was conducted last term and students were all very much engaged in competing the test.
Principal
Mr McFadzean will be returning to school next week in a full time capacity to resume his role as Principal. Please join me in welcoming Mr McFadzean back.

From HoD Senior Secondary
This is my last week of work for this year as I head off on Maternity leave. I have caught up with all year 12s and the majority of Year 11 students to go through their QCE points with them.
I am happy to leave the senior students in the very capable hands of Miss McKenna as she takes over from me as HOD Senior Secondary. I know that students will be able to easily adjust to this change.
A few calendar items that I would like to highlight before my departure;
• Tertiary Tour 16-19 July (Expression of Interest notes went out today, due next week)
• Shearing Camp Week 10 Term 2 and 3
• Deadly Recruits camp, information from Miss Weatherall
• Assessment for end of Unit 1 and 3 will finalise from Week 5 – 8.
For any questions or concerns you may have regarding your Senior Secondary students please email Miss Amy McKenna at ahmck0@eq.edu.au or 0475 974 009.
Mrs Deborah Addison
From HoD Junior Secondary
Welcome back to another wonderful winter term. I am excited to have had the opportunity to work in the Junior School as Head of Department for the last year and a half. I have really enjoyed working with the Year 7s, 8s and 9s and have got to know all of these students well. I have enjoyed doing transition with two rounds of new Year 7s to our school, attending camps and working with Year 9s on their future pathways. I am excited to be taking on a new opportunity and stepping into Head of Department: Senior Schooling for the remainder of the year while Deb Addison is on maternity leave. Miss Kym Weatherall will be stepping into Junior School HOD and I know I will be leaving the position in very capable hands with Kym. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns via email: ahmck0@eq.edu.au. Thank you.

Early Childhood Studies
This term, sees a continuation of a very worthwhile practice at our school i.e. visiting and participating at a potential career provider in our community namely the Early Childhood centres: NCC Early Learners in Kenny Lane and Balonne Kindergarten.
This year, the Year 11 and 12 Early Childhood Studies’ students have been visiting the centres each week in order to gather knowledge and experience of how the centres provide childcare in our community. A big thank you to Chrissie Southward and her staff at NCC and the Balonne Kindergarten staff who always welcome the students and willingly offer them their wisdom and advice.
During our visits, we are allowed to witness, interact, and coordinate activities under the expert supervision of the respected Early Childhood providers’ staff. The students are currently doing play based activities with the children using a range of skills that they have learnt and researched e.g. how to encourage the children to participate, how to organise an activity, and how to interact and supervise children from 0-4years.
The feedback from the students is very encouraging with many stressing that the visits are invaluable when completing the theory components of the subject. The practical based sessions assist the students to utilise their learnt knowledge and also ‘make sense’ of why we need to have regulations, protocols, and processes when operating said day care centres.
The visits have also broken down any barriers that the students may have been experiencing such as working with younger students, being an active supervisor of small children, and what they can do if they choose a career in childcare.
It is anticipated that we will continue this practice for the remainder for the year as our school is very supportive of this by allowing us to travel twice weekly to the venues in the school bus.
A big thank you also to Dave Campbell who drives the class to the centres each week.

BuRunda Creations
BuRunda Creations owner Nyssa Blades led students through an indigenous art workshop last week. The workshop provided an avenue for the students explore their creativity through culture with a focus on social and emotional well-being. Thank you Nyssa for visiting our school!
Homework Club
This term we are continuing to offer students the opportunity to participate in Homework Club. We hope to provide a quiet and supported space for students to complete homework and assessments. The program seeks to help students with time management and extra time with staff to complete work.
The program will run from 3:05pm- 4:00pm on a Thursday afternoon in the Library, beginning Thursday the 6th of May!
