POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING FOCUS Be Respectful |
From The Acting Principal
The NAPLAN practice tests will be occurring on Thursday 25 March and Friday 26 March for all Year 7 and 9 students.
This is the first year that St George SHS students will be doing the test online and the practice tests are a great way for them to learn about the functions that are available to them in the online testing environment. They will learn how the test works using a computer.
The St George SHS P & C are looking for volunteers to help with the Battle of Balonne BBQ that they will be running on 28 March from 6:30am to 9:30am. If you are available to help please contact the P&C or call the school office. The money raised goes towards supporting students at St George SHS.
The school Cross Country will be occurring on Thursday 1 April. This is the last day of school before Good Friday. This is a normal school day where the expectation is that all students attend school. Please encourage your student to participate in the Cross Country, even if it is to walk the course, and do not sign your student out of the school before the event.
The St George SHS Agriculture Show Team will be travelling to Warwick this weekend to compete in the showing and judging events at the show. This will be a positive experience for these students after a difficult week last week with the animals. Thank you to the staff (especially Miss Crowe) and the parents (the Fergusons) for supporting these students so that they can have such a wonderful experience.

Lions Youth Of The Year
On Tuesday night, the annual and prestigious Lion’s Youth of the Year competition was held at the Australian Hotel. Four students participated: Sam Waters, Haley Moloney, Lily Brimblecombe and Dayna Colley. The students had to sit an interview where they answered questions about themselves, commitment to studies, community involvement and current affairs engagement. They then had to deliver a prepared speech on a topic of their choice, and then deliver two impromptu speeches on topics that they had to think of answers for on the spot, which is always a nerve-wracking challenge! The winner receives a trip to New Zealand to participate in an exchange and attend a youth camp, which is extremely generous and highly rated by all of our past students who have attended the trip. This year, the Lions Club also have used some funding received from the recycling Containers for Change program to fund an extra incentive for the Lions Winner: an extra $5000 towards their further studies after Year 12. All students were fantastic candidates and role models for our school and should be commended for their effort in engaging with this competition, especially at this busy time of the year for Year 12s. This year’s winner for both the Public Speaking section, and the overall winner, was Haley Moloney. Haley delivered her speech on the importance of donating blood, and was a worthy candidate of both awards for her community involvement, exemplary behaviour and effort at school, and all-round citizenship.

From The Guidance Officer
Dear Parents
At St George State High School we aim to create a safe and supportive school community for everyone.
You are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone. The National Day of Action is 19 March 2021. On this day students will be creating messages of action on bunting to display in the classrooms. This week, Years 9 and 10 will participate in a presentation by the Guidance Officer around internet safety and respectful relationships.
Parents know their children best and know the best way to tailor communication to their needs. Adapt these tips to what works for you and your child.
If your child talks to you about bullying:
- Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to allow your child to tell you all about the situation. After they’ve told you their story, ask questions to get more details if you need: who, what, where, when. Although you may feel some strong emotions about your child’s experience, try to keep calm to avoid more distress to your child.
- Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and this may make them feel even worse. You could say things like, ‘That sounds really hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with that.’ or ‘I’m so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that’s not fair at all’.
- Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to want to protect your child, helping them to find their own solution is a better option. It helps them feel they have some power in the situation.
- Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies. The website has tips and ideas for different bullying situations. One idea is to practise strategies at home to help your child feel more confident.
- Contact the school. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help. Make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher and, if you need to, ask to talk with the principal. Contact the school immediately if you have a concern about your child’s safety.
- Check in regularly with your child. Keep the conversation going. It can take time to resolve issues, so check in regularly with your child about their experiences and their feelings. Your ongoing support is important.
Please feel free to contact the school if you would like to discuss any aspect of our approach to preventing bullying.
Thanks for your support to make our school a great school for everyone.
