POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING FOCUS

Responsible – I will participate in all class activities

From Deputy Principal

CLEAN UP ST GEORGE

“Clean Up Australia” inspires and empowers communities to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment. What was started thirty years ago, by an "average Australian bloke" who had a simple idea to make a difference in his own backyard has now become the nation's largest community-based environmental event. It is hard to believe that this initiative began as the inspiration of one man, Ian Kiernan. An avid sailor, Ian was shocked and disgusted by the pollution and rubbish that he continually encountered in the oceans of the world. Taking matters into his own hands, Ian organised a community event with the support of a committee of friends, including co-founder Kim McKay AO.

This simple idea ignited an enthusiasm and desire among the local community to get involved and make a difference. And surely if a capital city could be mobilised into action, then so could the whole nation! And so, it was that Clean Up Australia Day was born in 1990. Ellsy Rudd, a Year 11 student at St George SHS is also passionate about the environment and wants St George to be a clean town. Ellsy will be registering with “Clean Up Australia” to initially hold a day in St George where the community can come together and work to make St George an even nicer place.

It is proposed that this event will occur on Sunday 7 March 2021 at 10am.

More information will be available in the future. But for now, save the date and start getting your friends, family and local community groups together to make an impact that improves your environment.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN testing was reinstated in Queensland schools and will occur again this year for Year 7s & 9s.

This year students will be doing the test online. To learn how this works students will complete a practice test during the week of March 22 – April 23. This is important so that students can learn the different functions in the NAPLAN online site. For example, how to find the ruler and use it.

Further information for parents can be found at the NAPLAN online site at the link below:

https://staff.learningplace.eq.edu.au/lp/pages/default.aspx?pid=2500219

The public demonstration site is also a good place to go and see what the test will be like including some of the questions. Parents/guardians can attempt some of the questions on this site.

The actual NAPLAN tests will occur from 11th to 21st May for all Year 7 & 9 students.

Cricket:- Congratulations to Oliver Lockwood, Charlie Nelson and Dylan Hart who have been selected in the Balonne Under 12 Boys Cricket Team. They will compete in the next couple of weeks for the South West team.

Swimming:- Five little fish attended the South West Swimming Trials in Chinchilla this week. For some, this was the first time attending a “big” swim meet and nerves were apparent. For others, this was the race that would make or break this year’s goal: to reach STATE. Would the hours spent chasing the big black line be enough?

After a big season of training, and a long and tedious road trip, it was great to see all swimmers come home with a swag of personal best times (Pb’s). Well done Daniel Sheedy, Georgie Nelson, Cohan Neven, Josie Small and Lillian Stenhouse for once again representing our school with pride. Thank you to all parents for transporting students to the carnival and a special thank you to Amanda Stenhouse and Cameron Small for assisting with Manager and timekeeping duties.

CONGRATULATIONS to Lillian Stenhouse who was selected to represent SW at the State Titles in a few weeks. A lot of hard work has gone into this accomplishment.

SW Girls Rugby League :- Good luck to Sharon Pearce, Stavrianna Purcell and Brigitte Brunner who are trying out for the South West Rugby League in Roma today.

Netball:- Two teams from St George State High School are trialling in Roma for the South West Team. Good luck to the following:- 15 Years & Under - Grace Waters, Emalie Hams, Emma-Leigh Turnbull-Bennett, Bella Cubby, Kahlela Prince, Millie Lockwood, Nequwa Collins, Sienna Beardmore, Lillian Stenhouse and Georgie Nelson. 19 Years & Under – Paige Clark, Anna Moloney, Haley Moloney, Ellsy Rudd, Jessica Parkes, Bresharna McLachlan, Taeah Hiles, Michelle Hams and Breanna Lee.

Thank you for supporting Safer Internet Day!

A huge thank you to everyone who supported Safer Internet Day 2021. With your help, it was our biggest year yet. It was truly inspiring to see so many Australians starting the chat about online safety.

We had 4,000 educators, workplaces, government and community organisations register their support, a record 61,000 students participate in a Virtual Classroom and lit up the airwaves and the internet with activities from all around the country on the day.

We also launched our first picture book Swoosh, Glide and Rule Number 5 and eSafety song called My Family Rules. If you haven't already, watch the story time video with Jimmy Rees, learn the song and download or order your own copy of the book.

We hope you continue the vital conversations about online safety throughout the year and help make every day a safer internet day.
