POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING FOCUS Be Prepared I will Follow Classroom Expectations |
From Deputy Principal Nicole Hyland
Term 1 is quickly moving towards the holidays with only two weeks of school left. The focus before the holidays is on completing assessment. This information will be used to complete report cards to inform parents/guardians on how their student is progressing. Report cards will be available early next term.
The Education Department has been sending schools advice and updates on the Coronavirus (COVID-19). The Department said that schools are “to take all necessary local actions to support health and hygiene in our schools and workplaces and act in a protective and preventative manner to help limit the spread of this novel coronavirus” and to also remind
“students of the importance of hand washing and other proactive measures on a regular basis.” All of the toilets have soap available to students to wash their hands. Signs have also been put up in toilets to remind students to wash their hands and also the best way to wash their hands. Parents/guardians can help in supporting this, by reinforcing the important message of hygiene with their student and tell them to wash their hands regularly.
It was very exciting to see Weekend Sunrise in town on Sunday. This is very positive publicity for the town. So often, people can be negative about things. This does not help anyone. Be positive, nothing is going to get better by being negative about it. Congratulations to the Balonne Shire Council and everyone involved in producing the “Matesong”. As the ABC said, the whole Shire has “come together to celebrate the unique and quirky character of the region” through this song. The “Matesong” has been very positive for all the people in the Balonne Shire and has lifted the spirits of many people.

Year 12 Update
The Year 12 General subjects have all finished their first Internal Assessment items and marks have been submitted to the QCAA. The next step is CONFIRMATION where teachers will look at a number of student samples across the state to ensure that the marks awarded here in St George are the same as all schools across the state.
Assessment Policy
The new Assessment Policy has been emailed to all parents and students. This document outlines the purpose of assessment, the techniques of assessment, Academic Integrity, and Misconduct and the steps needed to Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments for students. This is a lengthy document but is the go to space for students, staff and parents to see what their responsibilities are around assessment. Please have a look at this document.
Assessment schedules were handed to students during Week 3 this term. They have also been advertised on our FaceBook page. These dates are set so that the teachers have time to mark and finalise results before they are due for reporting, either at a school level or to the QCAA. These dates need to be met, unless there are extenuating circumstances. If your student requires an extension they are required to complete an extension form, these are available through the office or myself.
Excursions
Tertiary Tour will be going ahead at this point, I will send out more information as soon as possible to those that returned the EOI form.
Year 10 Leadership camp is looking to be a wonderful experience. This camp is taking place at Emu Gully in Helidon in the final week of school for Year 10 students, 23/11 – 25/11.

Tylah Fontaine Wins Lions Youth Of The Year

On Tuesday 10th March, five of our talented Year 11 and 12 students competed in the Lions Youth of the Year competition at the Australian Hotel. Samuel Waters, Ken Cawaon, Chelsea Beardmore, Tylah Fontaine and Haley Moloney delivered a five minute speech as well as responding to impromptu questions for two minutes which required students to think on the spot.
All students performed exceptionally well and under pressure and received much praise from parents, teachers and guests. Prior to the evening, students were interviewed by the judges which contributed to their marks as well as their efforts on the night. Ken Cawaon won the public speaking component of the evening and Tylah Fontaine was awarded the overall winner of Lions Youth Of The Year. Tylah has won a trip to New Zealand in December, where she will gain valuable experience living with a host family before attending a two week youth camp. Congratulations to all students involved.
