NAPLAN
NAPLAN this year will take place from Tuesday 12 May until Thursday 14 May. All of the tests will occur in the mornings with the Language Conventions on Tuesday, Reading on Wednesday, Numeracy on Thursday and Friday will be a catch-up day.
While participation by all students is expected, students may be withdrawn from the testing program by their parent/carer. This is a matter for consideration by individual parents/carers. Withdrawals are intended to address issues such as religious beliefs and philosophical objections to testing. A formal application must be received by the principal prior to the testing. To do this, parents/carers must collect a form from the school office and when completed, return it to the principal before May 12 2020.
ATTENDANCE
All children should be enrolled at
school and should attend every school day.
It is a parent's responsibility to ensure that their child attends
school on every school day for the educational program in which he/she is
enrolled.
A parent of a young person in the compulsory participation phase is obliged
to ensure their child is participating full-time in an approved education
or training option.
Any time a student is not attending or participating in their educational
program it is considered an absence and must be explained.
Every day counts is a statewide initiative addressing the problem of student absences.
Every day counts promotes four key messages:
- all children should be enrolled at school and attend on every school day
- schools should monitor, communicate and implement strategies to improve regular school attendance
- truanting can place a student in unsafe situations and impact on their future employability and life choices
- attendance at school is the responsibility of everyone in the community. “

The First Term of 2020 is already well and truly underway, I hope it has been a smooth start for all.
I am excited for my third year here at St George SHS. I learnt so much about the town, school and students last year and I am looking forward to continuing my journey as HOD Senior Schooling.
This year marks the first year of the New QCE system in Year 11 and 12. Our Senior students have a lot of knowledge of what the QCE means for them. At the end of this year the Year 12 students will sit external exams with the rest of Queensland. This is the biggest change in our education system for over 20 years and everyone has been working hard to make sure that students will gain the outcomes they deserve.
All senior students are expected to uphold our school values and one of my focuses this year will be to ensure that attendance is above 85%. I will be working with the Year Level Coordinators to track students and reward great attendance.
This week I handed out an Expression of Interest Form for the Tertiary Studies Expo. This is a fantastic event where a wide range of study options, career opportunities and new trends in further education, training and employment are on show for students.

St George SHS organise this trip every second year for interested senior students. Please return the EOI form by 20 March if your student is interested.
I look forward to working with you and your students and hope that they enjoy coming to school every day.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact me via the office or at daddi4@eq.edu.au

In just four weeks, Yr 8 HEc have learnt about safety in the textiles room, mastered the use of the sewing machines and completed a water bottle or can cooler. Students are to be commended as this required good listening and observation skills and lots of patience with using the machines. They will begin their practical kitchen work on Wednesdays for the rest of the term.
Yr 9 HEc class made their first BYO feast this week with the boys making and consuming enough food for a small army. They will work on more appropriate serving sizes with other dishes they complete this term, having the option to make just enough for their lunch or a full quantity to supply dinner for home. To practise their design skills, we have looked at vertical, community & rooftop gardens to assist with redesigning our very sad vegetable garden. Hopefully a good water supply will continue so that we can produce ingredients that students usually only need a small amount of. Parsley, mint, coriander, rosemary and spring onions will be planted with cucumbers, tomatoes, capsicum, eggplant, snow peas, pumpkin, lettuce and strawberries also going in. Stay tuned for our “down the track” photos.

Mental Maths
Why do Maths teachers tell students that they need to know their times tables? We are constantly using these facts at school and in everyday life even though we may not realise it.
All students study fractions at some time and it is difficult to work with fractions if we cannot use our knowledge of multiplication facts to find common denominators or to simplify the fractions. We do not want to rely on calculators to do this all the time and often will not have one on hand and need the mental facts.
Therefore, it is vital that students work on knowing these basic times tables. It can be fun and well worth the effort as the students at St George SHS studying Mathematical Methods in Years 11 and 12 have found out. They have to sit some exams where they are not allowed to use any technology at all. This means no calculators at all and those times tables definitely need to be known!

Public Speaking Competition
Do you have something you want to say!
This year St George SHS will be running its own public speaking competition. Students are able to participate in the Rostrum Voice of Youth public speaking competition. This is a valuable activity to participate in as being able to communicate with others is becoming an important life-long skill that not only helps build confidence but employers are looking for it in their employees. This year the competition heat will be held at our school on Tuesday 25th February starting at 6:00pm.
The competition is open to students from Years 7 – 12 and is split over a junior and senior division. Information has already been provided to students who attended a meeting this week but it is still not too late to become involved. If anyone else is interested they can see Miss Garner for more information. It would be fantastic to have as many speakers involved as possible.
