POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING FOCUS Responsible – I will participate in all class activities |
Acting Principal
Since our last newsletter, a number of our end of year celebrations have taken place. At the Awards Night we celebrated the academic, sporting and cultural achievements of our students, it was great to recognise the hard work they have put in this year in very trying circumstances. While a number of the major awards on the night went to our senior students, it was exciting to see the number of our Year 7 students receiving awards and setting themselves a high standard to maintain in the years to come.
Last week saw our Year 12s celebrate their last day as St George SHS students with the completion of the Valedictory Ceremony. There were several proud parents in attendance to witness this rite of passage and parents officially signed out their students for the last time. My message to students was to live life without regrets, taking opportunities that present themselves and not worrying about the criticism which may come from having a go. To persevere if they fail the first time and to get up and strive again to achieve their goals.
Our Year 7 and 10 students have attended camps at Burleigh Heads and Emu Gully. Many returned bone tired but with fantastic memories that will stay with them for a lifetime. If your children attended, I hope you enjoyed some peace and quiet while they were away. Staff have only had positive stories about the behaviour and effort of our students while away.
I would also like to thank the Primary School P&C, especially Deb Weber and Amy Mutch for stepping in and running our tuckshop, providing food and drinks for our students for a significant portion of the year. This really helped to fill a gap for our students and it was great to see two school P&Cs working collectively. Together We Achieve.
Friday will be the last day for our Year 10 and 11 students and we will finish this most unusual year off with our junior students. Just a reminder that Wednesday 9 December is our final day.
Kind regards,
Mr Ferdinands.

Year 12 Valedictory
It was a real joy to see the Year 12s walk across the stage last week as they finished their schooling. With an early offer into University, starting full time work or spending time deciding on what their future will hold, I want to wish every student all the best.

Awards Night
From The Tuckshop – Deb Weber
On behalf of the St. George State School P & C I would like to thank the entire High School Community for making myself and our volunteers very welcome throughout Term 3 and 4 this year at the Tuckshop.
Thank you especially to Joy Weatherall and staff for their guidance and who regularly opened up and had the tuckshop ready for our arrival. To David Campbell who was always readily around to help with odd jobs that only his expertise could fix and to the wonderful staff and students who regularly supported the Tuckshop in that time.
Special thanks to Amy Mutch and Joy Cawaon who regularly helped out with Specials and great ideas and to Kay Rayner, Wendy Armstrong and Jo MacDonald for their support. Lastly, thank you to Ruth Beeson and the Primary P & C for supporting me in this role.
We trust we filled a need in the school community as along with Breakfast and the Tuckshop being open, it enhanced “community” in many ways and brought people together. It’s so important and I trust this can continue in the New Year.
I wish the High School P & C all the very best in their new endeavours for 2021 and wish the incoming Convener every blessing for a great year ahead.
Thank you again for all your support!
Wishing you a great holiday break, Merry Christmas and Happy New year.

Year 7 Camp – CYC Burleigh Heads

Last week the Year 7s, Miss McKenna, Miss Embrey, Chappy, Mr Fisher, and Miss Weatherall travelled to CYC Burleigh at the Gold Coast. After a quick stop at Dalby for lunch we hit the road again eager to escape Miss Embrey’s terrible singing and feel the soft sand between our toes. After a long eight hour drive, we finally reached our destination. The late night beach walk was a great way to start off our week full of adventure. The next two days were full of fun beach activities including body boarding, stand up paddle boarding and an excruciating but rewarding 12km canoeing journey. Despite the chafe and the penguin waddle it was a fantastic two days. Tuesday night we saw lots of moves and grooves, with Miss Embrey and Mr Fisher teaching us all how to do the whip. Later, groups performed Frozen masterpieces. Kaliam took the spotlight, transforming into an extravagant Elsa.

YR 7 CAMP PART 2
Wednesday night Miss Weatherall shed a couple of tears as Queensland took the win! Thursday, the day we’d all been waiting for: DREAMWORLD! We started off the day with a few tears as we safely reached the ground from the terrifying descent on the giant drop. After some more rides and lunch we ventured to White Water World. Splashing, sliding and soaking wet, we smiled and screamed as we slid down every single scary slide. With the RIP and The Green Room taking out “Ride of the Day” prizes! Tired and weary after our full week, we woke up at 6am Friday to get ready for the long drive home. An early start was the least of our worries as we had a seven hour drive ahead of us, full of karaoke and terrible singing. Despite the sunburn and peeling skin, we all had a great time. Arriving back home by 4pm, it was time to clean up the mess we had made. The girls cleaning the inside of the bus and the boys scrubbing the outside.

YR 7 CAMP PART 3
Year 10 Camp – Emu Gully
Well what a week the year 10s have had at Emu Gully adventure camp this week.
Miss Wallace and myself were impressed with the students growth over the week as they learnt to care for each other, listen to each other and work as a team. This camp teaches students through ANZAC stories and activities where the instructor not only tells them what to do but also debriefs with what they all learnt from the activities. The camp focuses on mateship, courage, resilience and respect.
I know that we are returning home with 12 very tired but hopefully more mature students.

9’s Gala Day
St George State High School boys ruled the field at Roma Cities Rugby League Oval, winning all their games including the final. The boys played unbelievably! And Miss Weatherall now knows how Craig Bellamy feels when the Storm won the NRL Grand Final by being showered with the cooler water. One of the many highlights was the 100m runaway try by Alex Cawaon who has never played Rugby League before. A well done also goes to Nate, Shontayne and Laith who played for Charleville winning one of their three games. A huge thank you must goes to Reeghyn Beardmore who gave up her time to train the boys every Thursday and passed on her knowledge of the game. Reeghyn is just awesome at what she does! Thank you to everyone who helped on the day and a huge thank you must go to Miss Kym Weatherall for putting this all together. Congratulations also goes to Jett Webster who was named Player of the Final.

Ali Brigginshaw Shield 9’s Gala Day
The girls played at Roma Cities Rugby League Oval yesterday with the help of Reeghyn Beardmore and Miss Kym Weatherall. The day was organised by QRL, to introduce girls into rugby league. The girls won two out of four games with Bella Cubby receiving Player of the Team. Well done girls!
