POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING FOCUS Respect - I will use polite language and tone |
From The Principal
Term 3 in any year is an exciting term at high school. This is doubly so in 2020 when we are working within the space of the first year to face external exams in Queensland for over 40 years and the demands that this has placed on all staff and students involved in the senior phase of learning.
To that end, I need to acknowledge the tremendous work done by my senior staff in developing the assessment items (and marking guides) that will be used in classes in 2021. This has been a huge effort by all staff involved in this aspect of learning.
Celebration Parade
It was a wonderful opportunity on Monday to celebrate the success of our students from their Semester One program of study. Ninety students received certificates acknowledging their academic performance, their outstanding effort, behaviour and/or attendance in the first half of the year. This is a tremendous result. Congratulations to all worthy recipients of awards. Photos of these students have been uploaded to our Facebook page for general viewing and each student present that day received colour image of them receiving their certificates.
Semester One Results
Semester One saw the staff and students at St George State High meet the challenge of providing off-site learning as we battled the first phase of the COVID-19. Across all aspects, students this year have outperformed previous assessment periods with over 76% of all students receiving at least a “C” level in their subjects for the semester. This result is testament to the hard work of the staff to prepare and provide units of work for our students.
Code of Conduct for students
We have been slowly working through the new Code of Conduct for students that will come into effect in 2021. I welcome parent and community engagement with this process and will be offering regular opportunities for parents and carers to meet with me to discuss this document. The first of these opportunities will be Tuesday 25 August beginning at 3:00pm in the school library. Given our regulations around COVID, I ask any parent or carer who wishes to attend this session to contact the school prior to this day. If you wish to be involved in this but are unable to attend this session, please talk to the school so we can provide you with regular updates.

Down at The Ag Plot
Over the weekend six St George State High School students learnt how to pregnancy test cattle at Drysdale Ponds.
The weekend started with the students meeting Betsy, the artificial model of a cow’s calving canal. David McCabe with 20+ years experience outlined the anatomy of the cow and what the students should be feeling when they put their hand in the cows rear end. The students felt the inflated horns and ovaries in Betsy, and also the rubbery bounce back feeling of a calf staring to form. The students were also lucky enough to view and feel the real anatomical parts of the reproductive tract of a heifer and identify the difference in sizes and feeling compared to the Betsy model. After the students were confident with understanding what to feel for while preg testing, the fun started when some real cows and heifers came into the yard and the students put all their theory into practice. The highlight of the day was feeling twin calves, on the very last cow preg tested. Many thanks to Michael and Kaylean Killen for lending their heifers and cows for the students to practice their preg testing skills. Michael Killen said It was a good opportunity and practical hands-on skill for the Agricultural students to learn.
A few quotes from the students:
Sharon - I needed a stool so I
didn’t get lost, it was a great experience!
Kaise - It was cold outside but it was warm
inside. I learnt so much over the weekend!
Bobby-Jo - The 8 month ones have a big boof
head!
Sam - We did it at a pretty good time because it
will be helpful for preg testing some of the cattle at home.
Harry - It was interesting because I learnt many
ways of finding the growth ages of the calves.

Year 11/12 Industrial Skills & Knowledge
Year 11/12 ISK (Industrial Skills and Knowledge) are working away cutting up the material for a cubby house that they are building for Begonia State School as part of their assessment. This semester will have the students applying their knowledge in construction to build the walls, roof, floor and deck of the cubby house. This will eventually be taken out to Begonia School in sections and assembled in its final location. Frames have been completed, deck is under construction and roof framing has begun.
