Senior Students Return To Class
Congratulations to all year 11 and year 12 students who have returned to school-based learning this week. I know how excited staff were to begin again the challenge of progressing through the senior course of study.
New Staff
It is my pleasure to welcome to our staff the new District Relieving teacher, Ms Jo Pickham. She will work across the whole Cluster as a support staff.
Return of Years 7-10
You will be aware that the Departmental plan is to make decisions on 15 May 2020 about the potential return of all students around 25 May 2020. I will send a notice to all families once I receive official decisions about this.
Tuckshop Closure
We are working through a plan to try to have the tuckshop open during school times at least once per week. We have surveyed students and staff, and now request input from families.
Please contact the school if you have any suggestions we may consider as we plan a way forward.
Mr York McFadzean, Principal
From The Deputy Principal
We are approaching the end of Week 4 for this term in very interesting times. Having the Year 11s and 12s back at school has made school a little more “normal” and the teachers are certainly happy to be teaching them again.
For our senior students, their return to school is significant. For these students nearing the end of their schooling and seeking to establish the foundations for their future training, work or study choices, this is a critical period. With the new senior assessment and tertiary entrance system taking effect this year, it has been a clear focus for us to get these students back into school.
We will continue to promote and practise hand hygiene in particular and ensure that we do this regularly throughout the day. Re-establishing these expectations and protocols in classrooms and throughout the schools is a key ongoing part of this ‘new normal’. We also need to remain alert to the need for physical distancing in and across our school.
The Department has instructed schools to contact parents/guardians EVERY day if a student is not at school. They are insisting on this contact so if you do not reply to the school text each day that your student is home and learning, a staff member will phone you during the day to confirm this. Thank you for your patience with staff who are making these calls.
I wanted to acknowledge and congratulate all school staff for the work you have done and continue to do to support students, parents, communities and each other.
Ms Nicole Hyland, Deputy Principal
From Hod Senior Secondary
Welcome back to Year 11 and 12 students. It has been wonderful to see students return to school with the majority of students ready to learn. Please have conversations with your senior students about catching up with any work they missed over the last 3 weeks. Now that all students have been in classes, they have had some feedback from teachers about what they need to have completed.
Year 10
A few students have opted for online resources only. This will save a fair amount of paper and the students are happier to work this way. If this is you or your student, please remind them to return work via email or OneNote.
At the end of this term, we will be completing Senior Education Pathway Plans (SET Plan). This is where students are able to discuss what their choices are for senior subjects and can complete subject changes for Semester 2 this year. Students will complete these plans before the SET Plan meeting. I will also send home some information for students to start to have a look at the options for senior school.
Year 11
Assessment has changed for Year 11 students and they will have less assessment due to the COVID-19 situation. This does not mean that less topics will be covered, as they still need to learn all topics so that they will be ready for external exams in 2021.
Year 12
Assessment has changed for Year 12 students as well. This does not mean that less topics will be covered especially because of external exams happening in Term 4. The schedule will be released on the QCAA website within the next weeks.
For any questions or concerns you may have regarding your Senior Secondary students please email me at daddi4@eq.edu.au or call 4620 8222.

Do It For Dolly Day
Do it for Dolly Day
This year, Do it for Dolly Day fell on 8 May. This day is all about raising awareness about bullying and suicide prevention. This year the Dolly's Dream Foundation asked that people wear blue and take a photo of themselves with their friends, family and workmates and post these photos to social media with the hashtag #DoItForDollyDay.
Do it for Dolly Day is about bringing the community together to celebrate kindness and unite in taking a stand against bullying. “By coming together on Friday 8 May and getting behind the cause, people will encourage their mates to do the same and, before long, everyone will feel brave enough to speak out against bullying,” says Dolly’s father, Tick Everett.
At St George State High School, teachers got involved by creating a sea of blue on Do it for Dolly Day, reminding people to be kind to those around them.
If you want to get involved, think of an act of kindness you could consider:
- call or text to check in on a family member/friend
- make a music playlist or card for someone you care about
- cook a meal for the people in your house
- write a positive online review for a small business
