Anzac Day 25th April 2020
Due to the COVID-19 Virus Pandemic and the significance of Anzac Day to the residents within the Balonne Shire, Care Balonne encouraged our local residents to acknowledge the 25th April by placing a flag on their mailbox at 6am and play the Last Post on their phones/facebook or by listening to their local radio station. Thank you to Care Balonne who mailed small Australian Flags to each resident within the Balonne Shire, with the Ode, the significance of the process and an invite to unite with all Balonne Shire residents. St George State High School laid a wreath on behalf of the school at the Cenotaph at 11am. Church bells rang and also a flyover by Balonne Airworks which helped us remember the fallen Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen & Nurses from all the conflicts and wars Australia has been involved in.

Term 2 – What a start to the term. Thank you to students who are staying in touch via email, OneNote, and returning work.
Year 10
A few students have opted for online resources only. This will save a fair amount of paper and the students are happier to work this way. If this is you or your student, please remind them to return work via email or OneNote.
At the end of this term, we will be completing Senior Education Pathway Plans (SET Plan). This is where students are able to discuss what their choices are for senior subjects and can complete subject changes for Semester 2 this year. Students will complete these plans before the SET Plan meeting. I will also send home some information for students to start to have a look at the options for senior school.
Year 11
Assessment has changed for Year 11 students and they will have less assessment due to the COVID-19 situation. This does not mean that less topics will be covered, as they still need to learn all topics so that they will be ready for External exams in 2021. Great work to students who have worked so well to switch to online learning. I am monitoring what students are doing with an Attendance OneNote.
Year 12
Assessment has changed for Year 12 students as well. This does not mean that less topics will be covered especially because of External Exams happening in Term 4. The schedule will be released in the next newsletter. Students are doing well with the switch to online learning and I have a QCE OneNote where students are logging what they are doing on a daily basis.
If you or your student is struggling with the work please contact the school as soon as possible so that we can ensure that they do not fall behind.
For any questions or concerns you may have regarding your Senior Secondary students please email me at daddi4@eq.edu.au or call 4620 8222.

Welcome back to this interesting time of learning for our school community.
I would like to thank parents and carers for their commitment to ensuring their child’s education will be continued. The support from parents with the picking up and dropping off of work packs for students and contacting teachers by email and phone has been fantastic. Also, the support from parents and carers in keeping their students home where possible has allowed us to manage the demands of juggling remote learning with student supervision.
Thank you also to the staff who have worked so hard to ensure that students continue to receive a quality education. Many hours have been spent preparing lessons suitable for remote learning, and collating the information to have it ready for collection. Not to mention the additional cleaning and facilities management that needs to occur to guarantee that school is safe for everyone.
In light of the social distancing measures put in place by the Queensland Government, there has been quite a lot of disruption to our normal school calendar and the extra activities, excursions and sport that add to the flavour of school life have been postponed or cancelled. This is not Term 2 as we normally know it, but we are looking forward to a time where we can get back to normal school life.

What’s Cooking In Your Kitchen
Home Economics at home seems to be running smoothly. No requests have come in for assistance – does this mean students are not getting to this work yet or are finding it easy to complete? Remember Year 9 & 10 students are encouraged to be practising their cooking skills independently if possible or assisting with meal preparation. Year 9 HEC are leading the charge with sending in cooking photos – thanks boys for these! They made me smile!

Year 7 HPE
Year 7 students are learning about different types of dance in HPE. Some of the staff wanted to demonstrate the Macarena in their lunch break for the students learning at home. Check out St George State High School facebook site.

Week 2: How are you taking care of you?
As we enter in our second week of learning from home it becomes more and more important to find daily activities to help improve the way we focus, our productivity as well as our relaxation.
The following exercises are QUICK and EASY.
Consider incorporating these into your daily routine, potentially use these as a break in between learning time or a way to unwind after learning is complete for the day.
Take a breath
Take time to stop, find a comfortable place to sit or lie down.
Take a deep breathe in for 3 seconds focusing on the muscles and the lungs as you do this. Breathe out for 3 seconds, paying attention to the way our body contracts as the breath leaves the body.
Get moving
Break up sitting at a desk by getting some blood flowing through some simple movements. Find a space outside or inside if possible and complete some simple movements such as stretches, star jumps, lunges or squats.
Separate work and play
Learning at home can mean that we are working, having fun and resting all within our homes. Where possible attempt to create a space that is designated to learning. Our brain starts to associate this space for learning and other spaces such as the couch for relaxing.
5 Senses
This is particularly useful if you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed or foggy. Find a quiet space and pause to take note of what is going on around you. Take note of what you can taste, what you can smell, what you can hear, what you can see and what you can feel.
To-Do lists
Creating a to-do list at the beginning of each day ensures that you have purpose in your work each day. A to-do list also allows you to tick off tasks as you complete them, creating a great sense of achievement and satisfaction!
Speak to a Teacher 9-3pm Ph 46208205
All students now have a direct line to call the school and speak to a teacher their concerns.
We have set up a dedicated phone line that can be used by students to talk to a teacher. This person may not be their actual class teacher but they will have access to the work provided by the class teacher so will be able to answer many questions. Those who they cannot answer will be emailed to the class teacher for a response. The phone number is 4620 8205 and can be called from 9.00am – 3.00pm.
