POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING FOCUS

Be Prepared
I Will Follow Classroom Expectations

The Graduating Class of 2019 farewelled their peers Friday at the Valedictory Ceremony attended by parents, community members and staff. The ceremony was compered by 2020 School Captains Ken Cawaon, Chelsea Beardmore and 2020 School Vice Captains Jack Davies and Paige Houlahan. The Welcome to Country was delivered by 2020 Indigenous Senior Leader Tylah Fontaine. Each year level thanked the Year 12 cohort for the guidance and friendship shown to them and wished the seniors well in which ever road they were taking in the future. Morning tea in the library was enjoyed by students, parents and staff. Parents of the 2019 Year 12 students then signed their own child out for the very last time in the Departing Year 12 Journal, continuing the tradition that was started a couple years ago. Best of luck to the Graduating Class of 2019!

From the HoD Senior Secondary – Mrs Deborah Addison

Term 4 is very quickly drawing to a close for the Senior school as it is a shorter Term for Year 10-12s.

Year 10

This Term the students in Year 10 are finalising their senior subject choices and are looking forward to a slightly longer holiday as they finish at the end of Week 8. The new QCE has some changes and if you have had past students gain an OP these are now replaced by the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank). If you would like any further information about this please visit the link below:

https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/senior-qce

Year 11

Year 11 students are finishing off their final assessment and either revising skills needed for Year 12 or starting their units for next year. A reminder that any unscheduled days off will require your student to catch up with the teacher in their own time. All time off can have major influences on student’s ability to stay on top of their studies so please try and organise holidays and appointments for outside school hours.

All students will meet with me over the next week to discuss results and subject changes that might be required for next year. Students who are completing any General subjects will have work to complete over the holidays and all students can revise the work from this year.

Year 12

The Valedictory was a wonderful event and it was lovely to see the school celebrating the Year 12s. Thank you for attending and making it a special event for the Year 12s.

I would like to wish all of the Year 12 students the best for their future endeavours. I am proud of each student and the fact that they have all gained their QCE. They had a lovely few days before Friday celebrating with their teachers and peers. Well done to these students, they should be congratulated on finishing the year successfully.

Please enjoy the photos from the event.

For any questions or concerns you may have regarding your Senior Secondary students please email me at daddi4@eq.edu.au or call 4620 8222.

What’s happening at the Ag Plot

The last few weeks has involved exciting preparation for the embryo transfer process of our donated Droughtmaster embryos. The embryo transfer technique enables embryos to be transferred from one female to another. It enables greater use of superior females in breeding programs. This week students were involved in watching the progesterone releasing device being removed from the cows as well as watching the vet perform injections to restart the cows ovulation cycle. The Year 10 Agricultural Science class helped the local vet glue the heat patch between the hip bones of the cow, while the Year 11 Agricultural Science class gave injections to the cows.

Students and staff look forward to when Ced Wise (an internationally recognised veterinarian and embryo transfer specialist) visits the school next week to transfer the embryos to the cows.

Camp Draft

On 8-10 November, 10 students from St George State High School and their horses travelled to Pittsworth to compete in the High School Camp Draft Percentile Cup. The students who participated were: Grade 7 Sharon Pearce, Grade 8 Jackson Halliday & Chloe Southern, Grade 9 Matilda Fry, Grade 10 Taylor McDougall, Bobby-Jo Tattam, Kate Southern, Max McGee and Ellie Birney & Grade 11 Haley Rollins.

After two rounds of competition (over 600 runs and 220 students riding), St George were very fortunate to have two students make the top 30 and secure a place in the finals. Both Jackson and Kate went into the finals with a score of 167; sitting in equal 6th place. Jackson had a bit of bad luck, but Kate had an amazing run and was awarded 2nd overall in the individual standings.

27 schools participated in the competition, with St George finishing 8th overall. The winning school was Rockhampton Grammar, 2nd Toowoomba Grammar School & 3rd The Southport School.

Every student should be extremely proud of themselves, they all rode beautifully and proudly represented their school. Thank you to everyone that made this weekend happen. The students greatly appreciate all the hard work and effort that goes into making these events happen.

Bec Halliday

The phone policy at St George SHS

Changes have been introduced to the mobile phone and personal digital device policy of the school following concerns about how these devices have become a barrier to learning. The new policy and its guidelines has been ratified by the school Parents & Citizens Committee and came into effect as of day one Term 2 2019.

Mobile phones will not be used by students from 8.45am until 3.00pm (including breaks) unless it is required for a lesson and authorised by their teacher. If a student has a mobile phone visible they will be required to take it to the office and can collect it at 3.00pm. Multiple confiscations will lead to further consequences.

Parents are encouraged to contact the school on 4620 8222 if they wish to contact their children during school hours or to provide feedback on this important matter that directly relates to removing barriers to student learning.
