POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING FOCUS

Year 9

From The Principal

Dear St George SHS Community
As we wrap up another incredible term, we want to take a moment to shine a spotlight on what makes our school truly special — our students.
Every day, we are inspired by the talent, dedication, and kindness our students bring to everything they do. Whether it’s academic excellence in the classroom, outstanding achievements in extracurricular activities, or the countless ways they support and uplift one another, our students continually show us what’s possible when young people are empowered, encouraged, and believed in.
Our commitment to nurturing well-rounded, confident learners remains unwavering. We do everything we can to support student learning not just during school hours, but across all areas of their lives — inside and outside the classroom.
A Time of Transition
This newsletter marks a meaningful milestone, as it will be our second-to-last edition. While newsletters have long been a valued tradition — much like newspapers — we recognise that the pace of the world has changed. Our community craves real-time updates and dynamic content.
That’s why we’ve shifted our focus to sharing stories as they happen, where they happen:
- Facebook: For regular updates, student spotlights, and good news stories that capture the heart of our school.
- LinkedIn: For professional highlights, educational developments, and celebrating the achievements of our students and staff in a broader context.
By moving to platforms that allow us to share success stories faster and reach wider audiences, we’re better equipped to celebrate the constant stream of inspiring moments that happen at St George SHS.
Thank you for reading, supporting, and being part of our school community. The stories will continue — just in a more immediate, engaging, and interactive way.
Yours in education
Thomas J. McKenna
P&C News
The P & C Committee and their volunteers have come off the back of two major fundraisers for the year. The Solo Network Rally and the ICPA Conference catering. Both events were very successful and we thank each and everyone of our Volunteers for showing up and lending a hand during these extremely busy events.
A special mention to our sponsors for their contributions towards the Solo Rally - Gillebri Cotton, Sams Fruit Shop, Riversands Winery, Lammattina, Cross Engineering, Beesons Electrical, National Australia Bank and Balonne Shire Council. Our community is amazing and always so giving – we are very grateful.
In our May meeting a motion was moved to purchase water bubblers and new picnic seating. The P & C has kindly donated $35,000 towards these purchases for the benefit of our children. This makes all of our fundraising so worth while.
We are currently running a raffle through Rafflelink. This prize is due to be drawn at the end of Term 2 – unless we haven’t reached our target. It is $2.00 per ticket to win $1000 1st and 2nd prize!!! If anyone would like a ticket please click on the link. Cash payments are accepted also - please see Nichole at the front office to purchase these.
The tuckshop has been extended to five days per week – to be reviewed on a term by term basis to ensure it is viable. In saying this, the Tuckshop is now consistently profiting thanks to the support of our families. The introduction of Flexischools has benefited our ordering system greatly and minimised our waste. Please ensure you continue to order through Flexischools. Can you believe it has almost been 12 months since we introduced Flexischools!
We also welcome Bonnie Mumford to the tuckshop staff. She joins Amy Mutch and Karizma Philp. With three Tuckshop staff members we encourage you to continue ordering and support our Tuckshop.
AWE Camp is just around the corner again. We will be calling for homebake. If you can donate some of your cooked goodies from home the Tuckshop is always looking for some and we will need all we can get for our visiting school students for AWE Camp. Don’t forget any fruit or vegetables that you grow – we are happy to receive also.
The positions of Secretary and Advertising Officer are still vacant. We are a very motivated, active and supportive Committee. If you feel you could spare some time to fill the Secretary or Advertising Officer role we would love to hear from you. Please reach out to Candice Cross. We promise to make it as lightweight as possible.
It has been noted in the minutes that moving forward all fundraising on behalf of the school and/or classes must be brought to a P & C meeting. This will ensure all fundraising is in line with the rules of P & C QLD and that is does not clash with any planned fundraiser already confirmed through the P & C meetings nor does it over extend our community businesses with their donations.
The P & C are looking at applying for a grant to renovate the existing tuckshop. Quotes are currently underway.
We would like to thank Lisa Sting for the 20 aprons which she made for our Committee in time for our catering events. They looked professional, were comfortable to wear and served their purpose.
The P & C will again be running the bar at the Year 12 Formal in September. If you are interested in running the bar and have your RSA please contact Candice Cross. The Liquor Licence has now been applied for.

Student Council News

The Student Council has been hard at work this year, organising fundraisers and aiming to improve student life here at St George State High School. Earlier this year, our Valentine’s Day stall was a huge success! Students had the opportunity to purchase heart-shaped balloons or plush roses for friends and classmates, spreading kindness and smiles across the school. It was heartwarming to see so many thoughtful gestures. We also celebrated the International Day of Happiness by wearing colours that made us feel joyful. The school was a vibrant rainbow of positivity! More recently, the Student Council ran a Parent’s Day store, offering a selection of small gifts that students could buy to show appreciation for their carers at home.

Looking ahead, we’ve got even more exciting events planned:
- Next Wednesday: Wear your team jersey for Game 2 of State of Origin!
- Next Term: Our 3rd Annual Pyjama Day, where students can enjoy a cosy school day in their favourite pyjamas.
- We’ll also be holding a Wear Blue Day with a gold coin donation, with all proceeds going to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
Funds raised throughout the year will contribute to installing a new shade cloth over the kiln, improving our school’s facilities for everyone. We’re proud of everything the Student Council has achieved so far and can’t wait to bring even more spirit and support to our school community. Stay tuned and get ready to show your colours next Wednesday!

Vicki Wilson Netball
Eighteen students participated in Vicki Wilson Netball Carnival on Friday 31 May. Both our junior and senior teams played hard all day in cold, rainy Toowoomba weather. Mrs McLean & Mrs Acton congratulate the girls on their ACE behaviour and sportsmanship.

Arthur Beetson Rugby League

Friday footy in Roma was filled with success, effort, and teamwork, as three of our teams rose to the challenge of the Arthur Beetson Cup. Heading into the tournament, we were on the back foot, with just enough players to make up starting teams. Despite this, our students showed incredible heart and spirit throughout the day.
The Year 9/10 team kicked off the day with an outstanding performance, displaying grit and determination. Although they narrowly went down in their opening game, their effort set the tone for the day. Next up were the 7/8s, who had limited time together as a team but overcame adversity and dug deep in their 15-minute games, putting in gutsy performances across the board.
Our Opens side followed, and with only 14 players, it was always going to be a tough ask against full-strength teams. They came out firing and started strong but unfortunately fell short in their matches.
Each team played three games in total. The Year 9/10s pushed through to the final and, although they were ultimately defeated, they showed incredible resilience and determination until the very end.
It was fantastic to witness the mateship and sportsmanship displayed by all of our students throughout the day. I am extremely proud of every student who represented our school—your efforts did not go unnoticed!

Year 9 DTI
Year 9's at the moment are at different stages with projects. Wooden stools are completed, CO2 racing cars are being made from balsa wood to be raced at the end of term with some students who have completed both projects designing their own projects from drawings and measurements to completion. Everything from hat racks to phone holders, miniature bats using the wood lathe to shoe horns. It's great to see such enthusiasm and creativity.
