St George SHS – Final Newsletter Edition
Farewell to the Newsletter – Hello to a New Era!
Dear Students, Parents, Carers, Staff, Alumni, and the wonderful St George SHS Community,
As we share this final edition of our school newsletter, we do so with immense gratitude, pride, and a touch of nostalgia. After many years of informing, celebrating, and connecting with you through these pages, the time has come for us to evolve with the times. This will be the last traditional newsletter from St George State High School – but certainly not the last time you’ll hear from us!
We’re not saying goodbye – we’re simply saying “see you online.”
As our world grows increasingly digital, so too does the way we communicate. From this point forward, we will be focusing our communication efforts through our Facebook page and LinkedIn profile. These platforms allow us to connect with you more frequently, share updates in real time, and celebrate the achievements of our students and staff as they happen.
We also plan to continue engaging with our broader community by contributing to the Balonne Bulletin when opportunities arise. It’s our way of remaining a vibrant and active voice in the local area while also embracing more dynamic communication platforms.
A Deep and Heartfelt Thank You
To each and every person who has ever taken a moment to read, share, or reflect on our newsletters – thank you. Your attention, feedback, and encouragement have meant more than words can fully capture.
While I have had the privilege of being part of the St George SHS community for the past three years, this school’s story and its newsletters stretch back much further—decades of dedication, growth, and connection that have shaped the school into the vibrant place it is today. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all those who have been part of this journey over the years—past leaders, staff, students, families, and community members—your legacy has laid the foundation for everything we continue to build upon.
Thank you to our loyal readers who have eagerly awaited each new edition across the years. You reminded us why this form of communication has mattered so long, bridging generations and keeping us connected.
Thank you to the parents and carers, both past and present, who found joy in seeing their children’s successes celebrated and who used the newsletter as a trusted window into our school community.
Thank you to our wonderful staff—past and present—who have tirelessly contributed content, shared student highlights, and ensured that every newsletter truly reflected the heartbeat of our school.
Thank you to the students, whose achievements, adventures, creativity, and hard work have always given us the stories worth telling. You have been and remain the reason we have so much to celebrate.
And thank you to the wider St George and Balonne communities—your ongoing support, spanning many years, has been a cornerstone of our school’s success. It has been, and continues to be, our privilege to serve, inform, and grow alongside you.
Together, across the years and into the future, you have all made St George SHS a special place to learn, grow, and belong.
What’s Next?
This isn’t the end – just a new beginning in a more connected, interactive space.

We encourage everyone – parents, students, past students, and community members – to join us online and continue engaging with our school in new, exciting ways.
Final Reflections
As we turn the page on the newsletter, we also reflect on the journey we've shared. The newsletter has documented not only events and announcements, but the very spirit of our school – our challenges, our triumphs, our culture, and most importantly, our people.
While the format may change, the message stays the same:
We are proud of who we are, what we’ve achieved, and where we are going – together.
Looking Ahead – Changes from Semester 2
To keep in step with the times and continue improving our processes and facilities, from Semester 2 we will be implementing the following changes:
- All suspension paperwork will be emailed directly to parents and carers. Please ensure your email address is up-to-date with the school office to avoid missing important communications.
- A transition time will be introduced between Lessons 1 and 2 to help students and staff move more smoothly between classes.
- Our library and Flexi learning spaces will be back in action—refurbished and refreshed, with new furniture replacing items previously on back order.
- Seniors will enjoy access to a dedicated senior kitchen space within the library, allowing this area to be open all day and supporting a more comfortable and flexible learning environment.
- Playground duty areas and rosters will be adjusted to better support teachers, giving them more time to plan and provide both academic and behavioural support for students.
- Homework Club will be reopening three days a week after school on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday to provide additional academic support for students.
These changes are designed to enhance the school experience for everyone and continue our commitment to adapting and growing with the needs of our community.
With warmth, gratitude, and deep appreciation,
Thomas J. McKenna

Bus Stop Upgrade
The Department of Transport and Main Roads will be upgrading our school bus stop and drop-off zone during the upcoming vacation period.
Once the works are complete, please pay close attention to the new signage and layout. The updated design will provide improved access and clearer directions to help ensure a safer and more efficient drop-off experience.
We will keep families informed of the project's progress and completion via our Facebook page.
We thank the Department of Transport and Main Roads for their continued support and commitment to student safety.
Social Media Links
As mentioned in our previous newsletter, this is our last e-newsletter. Communication will now be through the St George State High School social media channels:
- Facebook: For regular updates, student spotlights, and good news stories that capture the heart of our school.
- LinkedIn: For professional highlights, educational developments, and celebrating the achievements of our students and staff in a broader context.
We look forward to connecting with you via our social media channels.
School Watch
The School Watch Program is a partnership between Education Queensland, the Queensland Police Service and the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce criminal activity in Queensland schools and encourages everyone to look out for after-hours crime in our schools. If you see anything suspicious, please don’t attempt to intervene.
Look, Listen, Report. Call School Watch on 13 17 88.
If you see a crime in progress, call Triple Zero (000).

From Deputy Principal Junior School

As we wrap up Semester 1, I want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible efforts and achievements of our Years 7–9 students. From the energy of our Year 7s settling into high school life, to the growing leadership shown by our Year 9s, it’s been a semester full of learning, growth, and connection.
One of the standout successes has been the improvement in student attendance across all three year levels. This is a testament to the commitment of our students, families, and staff in recognising that every day at school counts. Thank you for your ongoing support in helping our young learners thrive.
Looking forward to Semester 2, we’re excited to continue to grow our reading interventions aimed at strengthening literacy and fostering a love of reading. These include:
- Word Study: Building vocabulary and decoding skills through targeted activities.
- DEAR – Drop Everything And Read: A dedicated time where students pause their day to immerse themselves in a good book. It’s a simple but powerful way to build reading stamina and enjoyment.
These initiatives are part of our broader commitment to ensuring every student has the tools they need to succeed—not just academically, but as confident, curious learners.
We’re also thrilled to invite all prospective and current families to our Open Night on Tuesday, 22 July from 4:00 to 6:00pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to explore our learning spaces, meet our passionate staff, and discover the programs that make St George SHS a vibrant and inclusive community.
As always, I encourage families to stay connected with us. Whether it’s through parent-teacher interviews, newsletters, or a quick chat at drop-off, your partnership is invaluable.
Wishing everyone a restful break and a strong start to Semester 2!
Deb Addison

NAIDOC Week “Next Generation”

This year, our NAIDOC Week theme is “Next Generation” and it’s one that speaks straight to the heart of what today is all about.
We’re here to celebrate our young people, our future leaders, change-makers, and culture keepers. From our deadly Year 7s finding their feet in high school, to our strong and resilient Year 12 students who are pushing through to the finish line, we see you, we believe in you, and we are so proud of the journey you’re on.
To our Deadly Year 12 students, you are trailblazers. You are breaking through barriers and showing what is possible for young Indigenous people in education. You are leaders in your own right, walking paths that weren’t always open to those before you. You are making a difference just by showing up, staying strong, and staying true to who you are.
Among you are our future doctors and nurses, who will care for the health and spirit of our mob. Our future teachers, who will inspire and empower the next generation. Our future builders, who will shape not just homes and skylines, but stronger communities. And yes, we’re sure there’s at least one lawyer among you. We know the one who never lets a debate go unanswered! That fire, that curiosity, that passion, that’s what we need.
And I want to say this as well, this journey isn’t walked alone.
To all students here today, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, you are all part of reconciliation. When you walk alongside each other, when you listen, when you learn, when you stand up for truth and justice—you are helping shape a future that is better, fairer, and more respectful for everyone.
So let’s keep celebrating. Let’s keep learning. Let’s keep walking forward, side by side, as we honour the past, embrace the present, and uplift the Next Generation.
Thank you to the NAIDOC Committee, Family Support & Community Justice (Aboriginal Housing), SWIC, Lifeline, Goondir Health Services, QPS, CUC.
Thank you
Kaila Neven

Clinton Toopi Inspires St George SHS Students Through "All Stars: Get in the Game" Workshop
St George State High School recently had the incredible opportunity to welcome former NRL player Clinton Toopi, who delivered his powerful All Stars: Get in the Game workshop to students across all year levels.
A proud Māori sportsman and former New Zealand international, Clinton shared his journey through professional rugby league and beyond, using his experience to empower and educate young people about mental wellbeing, respectful relationships, and self-leadership.
The 120-minute sessions were split into two engaging parts: a high-energy ball skills component where students built teamwork and confidence through sport, and a meaningful wellbeing talk that focused on making positive choices, cultural identity, and building resilience.
Students responded enthusiastically, connecting with Clinton's down-to-earth style, real-life stories, and powerful messages. His passion for supporting young people was clear in every session, and the energy he brought left a lasting impression on both students and staff.
We are grateful to Clinton and the NRL team for bringing such a valuable experience to our school community. Programs like these play a vital role in supporting the social, emotional, and physical development of our students and this one hit the mark both on and off the field.
From the Staff and Students at St George State High School, again we thank Clinton, and I hope that opportunities like this can return in the future.
